Most times i just coat the gears and bearings with gear oil when assembling, but this 5 speed is a bit more complex and i want to make sure i do not ruin it. What do you guys use for assembly lube for an AX5 5 speed? Do you soak the synchros in oil first? I found my synchros in teh tranny were not bad, but the brass was pretty dark and rough feeling.

I used Petrolium Jelly when I rebuilt a T-18.. It desolves completely in gear oil. Also is stiff enough to hold all those little needle bearings in place if you have them. Make sure you swap out the tranny fluid after about 100 miles.

What fluid does the ax5 take? I use trans assembly lube on auto trans because petroleum jelly doesn't disolve good in it. On manual trans I usually just assemble and drizzle some oil thats going in the trans on the parts. Ill usually just use the lube to hold bearings in place.

That is what i ended up doing. i rubbed a good coating of oil on the parts when assembling. For the AX5 i am using synthetic 10/30 motor oil. there is a big thread about it and i guess it was approved by Aisin. Kind of funny looknig at the transmission, you can tell it sat for long periods of time cause there is a very dark oil level line. So far i have the gears and shafts installed, i just need to do the shift rails, and i need to get the petrolium jelly for the input shaft bearings.

I have a YJ with a AX-5. I think it calls for 80W90 gear lube. Although I've heard people using 10W30
