Turbo 350 Oil Leak

I have a problem with a GM Turbo 350 transmission I adapted into a older Willys jeep. The transmission is out of a 1973 Chevy Blazer 4 wheel drive. It has been in the jeep for 3 decades with no real problems. Recently as I have started driving it much less, I notice large puddles of transmission fluid on the ground under the jeep.

I have checked for leaks and it looks like the fluid is being forced up the downshift cable and coming out the end of the cable and running down the engine to the ground.

In looking online it appears that pressure is building in the case and forcing the fluid out. Some people say I need to replace the front pump seal and bushing to prevent the fluid in the converter from seeping back into the transmission and leaking out.



Any suggestions?

 

check the vent and make sure it's not over filled. Ron

 

Man, I am glad to finally meet somebody else with an auto in a short wheelbase Jeep.

Anyway, the most likely culprit is the Kick down detent cable.


The o-ring can be replaced but you have to disconnect the cable from the wire inside the tranny. The wire inside the tranny is bent in a square "S" shape and it hooks into the hole in the kick down cable. Once you take the bolt out and pull the cable housing up it will be obvious how it's connected.
When you pull that cable housing up, be prepared for some tranny fluid to leak out of there.
When your going for parts, get a new dipstick grommet , O ring , FelPro - thick cork pan gasket , Hi-Tack & tranny Filter.
If you do this , you'll be good to go for many more miles.

I've seen the vent tube filled with mud and other stuff. That caused fluid to come out the dip stick tube or any other spot it could find.

 

What I found was that someone had connected the vent t5ube to the Dana 300 vent tube so that neither one could bleed off pressure against the other. Put new rubber vent hose on each and out a one way bleeder vent on the end and it cured the problem.

It really became a problem a few years ago when I added an aux oil cooler, I guess the added fluid just needed a place to go.

 

I bought a Plymouth street rod from a guy who thought the turbo 400 needed rebuilt, the dipstick kept popping out of the tube and puking trans fluid everywhere, mud daubers had filled the vent tube that's on top of the case. EZ fix.

 

Last winter I took the Propane tanks off of my Travel Trailer to use in the shop with a Radiant Mr. Heater When I hooked them back up in the spring, nothing in the trailer would work. On close examination, mud daubers has filled the propane lines and I had to replace them both.

 

They always get in my tire inflators. I have to put them in the tool box now.
