Hey Guys, where can I find an advance can with a 90 deg inlet, for my HEI going in my 231 Buick v6. The dist. that I bought has a straight inlet. Its just too close to the fan. I know I have seen these in the past. I have searched the usual places.

I would have to do a lot of grill mods to accommodate a fan spacer. I have about 3/4 in clearance now. I'd rather not.

Can you simply rotate your distributor to a convenient angle then index your wires to the original position with respect to the rotor, which didnt move?

The proper orientation of the HEI dist for the 225/231 will put the vacuum can with straight inlet pointing under the T-stat housing. This is so you can adjust the vacuum advance tension spring through the inlet tube. Many vacuum units are adjustable. If you go with the curved inlet you will need to get the can with the proper built in advance and/or a curve kit.

I tried that, but didn't work. I also tried, several positions and it really needs to sit in the position in the pic. The raised area under the point where the ignition wires attach are hitting the manifold, and when I try to rotate the opposite way, the external boss for the cap hold down hits also. I rotated it clockwise far enough this eve to get it cranked, and it seems to be close enough with a timing light. I will have very little adjustment room with the straight inlet.
I also got frustrated with it because the new radiator leaked around the bottom outlet. I had a local guy change the angle of the outlet, from angle toward the center of the rad, to straight toward the rear of the jeep. He left 2 tiny holes in his tig weld, just enough for drips.
Well maybe I'll get the pic up in a few.

Here is the distributor that it has now. The other one that I have doesn't have a vacuum can, and looks to be set up for electronic control.

You need to pull the Distributor and re-stab it into a different position. All you have to do is KEEP the firing position on Number One, move the slot in the pump a the bottom of the distributor and rotate a tooth. You can put the distributor in any position this way. I also have to juggle the vac advance can and rotation for timing as the cap bolts hit the heads. I also put a spacer on my fan blades and only run it about a 1/4" off the radiator.

Its a delicate, yet frustrating dance :)

I have pulled the dist. several times and cant seem to find the sweet spot. Seems like it is hitting something every cog I set it on. I'll keep trying.
    This is a 231 evenfire.
Didn't get to work on it this eve. The fridge is on the fritz again tday, and second time is the charm for it. Local furniture store is on the way with a new one.
    That'll make the wife happy.

Those HEI must sure be sump'm for so many Jeepers to endure fitment issues, wiped out gears, etc. Might have to try one to see what all the fuss is about. Makes points maintenance seem easy.

I had a terrible "clack clack clack noise in the 231. Dug out my stethoscope and did some troubleshooting. Found a place on the front of the oil pan that sounded like I was real close. I pulled the pan and found that the front rod cap nuts, for #1 & #2 cylinders were hitting the pan. Had cut 2 tiny grooves in the pan and scuffed the edge of the rod nuts. The pan looked perfect from the outside and inside. Didn't look battered or bent. Put a bfh in action, and tried it again. Smooth sailing this time. ????? The little motor sounds pretty quiet and smooth. I retorqued the rod nuts while I was in there also, and they were fiine
Anybody else had a problem like this? This is a first for me.

I got some kind of an Edelbrock carb on it now. Don't know what size. It has a 4 barrel man on so I need to match.
    What you guys recommend?
