VIN Locations

Does anyone know the specific places, other than the dashboard, where I can check for the VIN #. I would like to see if mine all match up.

Driver side firewall is where mine is.
Some (I cant find it on mine) have them on the frame under the battery box.
Some of the Gurus will chime in I'm sure.

Looks like you have a '72 or later CJ-5? If so, perhaps post over in the "intermediate" section in case those gurus don't see it here.

some of the late 70's and the 71's you know the earley AMC cj5's had the vin tag on the dash like all the 72's and up AMC's

I did hear a rumor once that a serial number (or the like) was cast into the tailgate somewhere. Anyone have any idea about that, and where exactly it'd be?

I have several other questions about the Jeep too...starting with the body/tub. I am trying to verify the year. The VIN on the dash says Oct. 1969, but there are several things on the tub that don't make sense, like no access hole for the brakes, no u-shaped indentation in the tub over the rear wheels, and the "JEEP" stamped by the windshield is more similar to today's style. Yet it has the master cylinder on the frame, older style windshield clamps/windshield, and under the seat gas tank, and standard tailgate opening. The paint is uniformly rusted. That's why I would like to match VIN's

Jim most older Jeeps are so swapped out parts wise its hard to tell by parts.
It looks like big lights in the grill also.
Cant tell from the pic but what about the front fenders, do they have reflectors?

from the pictures it appears that you have a late 1970 model. the clutch and brake pedals have earlier model metal pads. the dash looks 70 and with under the seat tank that rules out the 71 and looking at the rear there was no tank under the back.............good luck

 

Did they run Model years like they do today back then? If they did, then by the manufacture date of Oct. 69 would make it a 1970, which fits. Thanks.

 

the 'Jeep' script is intermediate. I couldn't tell from the rear pumpkin to see what it was. Rounded cover = AMC D20. "bumpy" cover w/ flange is D44 late Kaiser production.

 

the 69 and 70 model year blended some what. they took the left over 69's and retaged them 70's. they were easy to tell the differances though. yours is a true 70 by your photo's............

 

Until on or around 1981, there was no standard for VIN numbers, each mfg chose to configure their vins separately, and generally there was only one vin, or perhaps two. the current 17 digit vin did not come about unitl 1982 or so and there are specific requirements as to placement. As to the jeep, I know of only the firewall plate for the year and there is no "secrete vin" on the frame, tail gate or otherwise for the "early cj-5". In fact, if your jeep doesnt have a vin, you can often apply for a DMV issued one depending on the state you live in. Thats why in California, old jeeps are so valuable, as you can "re-vin" your jeep with a purchased vin.

 

To be truthfully honest I think what you have is a 72-73 Cj5 Cheeta body (pinstriping is an exact match) on a 70 model frame with the original 69-70 model dash. For one thing the Jeep script is all wrong and so is the center section of the floor pan, no brake access, the holes for the pedals are way to large, (2) there is what appears to be a partially covered (Bondo'd) hole where a rear fuel filler would go that is not suppose to be there.
There looks to be the brace under the rearend that would have been there for a 69 to early 70 model. I think what you have is a mix & match Jeep.

I know this has been posted before, but I will mention it again...

My 67 CJ-5 has the VIN stamped on top of the passenger frame rail directly beneath the firewall mounted battery tray. Clean the frame good in that area and take a look with a strong light.

It is also stamped on top of the frame rail directly over the rear axle tube, also on the pass side. The only way to see it is to pull the body!

I took some pics of these but they are on my old computer that crashed.

 

Thanks guys. I was suspecting that it was probably a combination of parts. Does anyone have anymore information on the Cheta model?

I do not have info on the Cheeta model, most guys don't know they ever existed, I have seen 2 of them and both were painted the same as your body with that exact pinstripping on them, along with a Cheeta logo running down the hood like the Renegade logo does. My friends was a 74-75 model, with a v8, it had a few features besides the engine and Decal package but can't remember for sure what all they were but you also have to remember these were the longer wheelbase AMC models and there probably wouldn't be anything mechanical that woulds wap over with out a little work or fit time unless it was cosmetic body stuff.
