What Are The Tubes For On The Back Corner Of Cj5 Bodies?

I'm just starting to restore a 1964 CJ5 tub to replace the one that's totally rotted out on my 1965 Jeep. The '64 has these tubes on the outside of the back corners, but my '65 didn't have them. I see photos of them on lots of old CJs online, but I haven't seen any photos of them in use.

I'm assuming that they are mounts for some sort of accessory or roof. Am I right?

Those are for the original type of top bows....basically called a pocket. The newer tops you see have the pivoting bows that are mounted closer to the seats. There should also be on each side a pocket near the front seats that the forward bow sits in.

Thanks for the info, Glenn. That's what I figured but I couldn't find any photos.

Don't throw them away if you remove them. People need them sometimes when a previous owner of their JEEP hacked them off and tossed them.

Yeah, wheelie, I was debating whether I'd leave them on or not. I kinda like how they look even if I don't use an old top. Plus I want it to be obvious that this is an older CJ, so I'll probably keep them, even though one of mine is squished right now.

Seems like it would be easy enough to fabricate a pair if you were missing them though, right?

Those top bow pockets should be found on both '64 and '65 model years. They continued to be present into the '66 model year, but I have never determined exactly when they were phased out in the '66 run.

Donny, well the '65 I've got may have had a newer body on it...the VIN plate is held on with screws instead of rivets, so it was probably swapped out.

If I recall being told at one point that they were an option, thus not all CJ's had them. I bet Glenn would know.

I think the vin plates were held on with screws until 69 or 70. That's when rivets began.

Well I appreciate the vote of confidence but whether or not they were an option is beyond me. :)

Yes, not too hard to fabricate I guess. Just saying that sometimes they are missing. Some folks like them. Some folks don't.

They are not hard to straighten out either, when they are damaged. A pipe or rod of appropriate diameter, rounded off at one end, can be driven into and through the hole to straighten it out. A little bit of heat might help it along.

    Thanks for the pics.

I wonder why they put the roof mounts outside the body instead of insetting them like the ones for the front hoop? Maybe to make sure it hung over the tailgate?

Anyway, yeah I'm not too worried about straightening mine out with a little heat and a makeshift mandrel.

Sorry guys, that's not mine. I stole the pics from EWillys. I searched for it because I couldn't quite remember how they mounted.

Sorry, Glenn. I remember being told or reading somewhere that they were optional and for some reason I thought it was you. But at my advanced age and brain/memory deterioration, I'm lucky to remember to breath every day. Hell, I'll probably have to go back to diapers too some day when I stop forgetting to head to the head. My grandson is transitioning from pull ups to big boy underwear, so about the time he gets there he can teach me how to transition the other way. :)
