One of the challenges with these large bull bars is how they kill the visibility of the turn signals. Wiring the headlight halos to flash will definitely help oncoming traffic.

I also wired the turn signals to the fog lights using diodes. Definitely makes the turn signals more visible.

Today wasn't super productive for jeep work, but I did get a few things done. The biggest of which was cutting off the battery tray in preparation for v6 engine mounts. I'm totally kicking myself because I'm cutting the mounts out of what used to be a perfectly good frame, that I cut in 3 (to stretch to cj6 length).

The big push today was painting the frame and undercarriage of my 1978 f150 "shorty" so I can sell it. What a tough and terribly messy job.

As a side note on frame paint jobs, the attached pic is of my jeep frame with a coat of POR15 that I put on in 1995. It is basically solid rust underneath the paint and coming off in sheets.

So it was painted 25 years ago? Honest question, do you think the POR didn’t live up to it’s hype or would this have happened with any coating? I know environment can make a huge difference. There are 15 year old factory TJ frames here on the island that are now completely rusted through.

Well, 15 of those 25 years was stored in a garage and never taken out (I was away in the military). The last 10 it was kept outside, but most of that time was under a car cover (admittedly on dirt).

I can't really say how normal paint would have held up to those environments, but what I'm a bit disturbed by is the almost universal rust under the por15. It's like the entire frame is surface rust.

The f150 that I was repainting the frame today lived in similar conditions as the jeep did outdoors, and seems to be in much better shape, with regular paint and that crap rubberized under coating stuff. The undercoating flaked off as well, but was pretty clean underneath.

Hello, my Friend & pardon me..........but your picture doesn't look too rusty at all ? Is that the factory green on the frame ?

That was my experience as well, put POR on in 1999, in 2015 it started to bubble up. and started coming off in sheets.
I have been cleaning and using Chassis Saver this time.

No, it's the gray POR showing through the black topcoat, I think. It does look very green in the picture, so maybe a bit of overspray from the paintjob (ford jalepeno green)?

That's weird, right? I wonder why. I would think the POR would provide an air tight seal like they advertise, but maybe over time it degrades and lets moisture and air in, creating rust?

I think this time around I'm just going to use semi-gloss enamel rustoleum, and touch up as necessary.

I've used Rustoleum semi-gloss for 25+ years now and it's always held up well. And like you say, it's easy to spot fix as needed. That said, I don't live in the rust belt.

Yeah.....Any gaps at all, even from rock chips, will let the moister in & trap it. Rustoleum is a better choice , " cuz it penetrates it's substrate a bit.

I don't think I'll be painting my frame safety red, however!!!

But serious question: is there any benefit to adding an enamel hardener in the rustoleum paint for the purpose of painting the frame? Do you think it would be stronger?

The enamel hardener kills most if not all of the flexibility properties of the oil based enamel. Just put a good coat on and let it dry for a couple days.

I have always disliked the way the baja offroad lights attach. the housing is thin and flimsy hard to aim. So I redesigned the mount :bananatool:

I should also say I washed the garage door mat as my wife requested....taking the willys was just a bonus....
Much of the engine and drivetrain got a good degreasing, so it was pretty darn spotless. I took the slightly long, roundabout way home that included a short freeway jaunt....parked it in the garage on the clean floor (was garage cleaning day) and seeing how much it drips. A few drips already, but its not pouring out. The rear of the driver side valve cover is seeping quite a bit, and the driver front corner of the intake manifold is also seeping - hard to tell whats happening down the back side....No way probably to do it 'right' without pulling the engine to create some space, but maybe this will do for now....we'll see.
