Mom and Dad visited for the first time this year. I don't think they have seen the ol' girl since I put a v6 in 6yrs ago. The rebuilt carb fired right up on the 2nd try and it didn't leak oil everywhere. While it buzzed along We chatted about our old s10 with a 4.3, the k30 with a 305 and later 350. I think they approve.
It was running 210f and 40psi on the oil at 2200 rpm without any carb adjustments. I turned the key off and it dieseled for a while then ran backwards.
Guess I need to lower the idle and check timing.

Hmm. So fixed my vacuum leaks. Timed up nicely, vacuum gauge tuned the carb 17"@idle ( sweet) and then there's this when you rev it up. Gritting my teeth this isn't a rod knock. Even though it's been 30yrs since this engine was built I clearly remember plastigauging the mains and rods on the crank kit. Other than the Rhoads lifters and the whining POS ps pump it sounds good. I'm wondering if the rockers are hitting the valve cover when the lifters come up with the rpm. Sigh, what say ye?

    Rich,
My opinion is that is NOT a rod knock. It's a rocker or two loose on their pivots. If they are hydraulic lifters , then that's the problem. Pull the covers , build some oil dams with rags, and try to adjust the lifters by sound .

Yea it doesn't sound like the knocks I've heard. This valvetrain is not adjustable and I have Rhoads ( fast bleed) lifters to tame the cam. I'm going to pull the valve covers and have a look. I've got a small valve cover leak anyway. Youth, if it wasn't a pain I'd pull the cam for something tamer.

I hear you, 'Old boy ! So ... the rockers ride on a shaft ? The Rhoads are hydraulic. . Pull the covers , run her, & listen and look. You'll most likely hear & see it . It sure sounds like a bad lifter to me . :(

I had a noise similar to that in my 231 that I recently put in my 3B. I crawled around, over, under with a stethoscope, and finally decided it was just inside the front of the oil pan. When I pulled the pan, I found the front 2 rod cap nuts were hitting the inside of the oil pan. The pan did not looked deformed at all. A few licks with a bfh, put the pan back on and no more noise.
    YMMV

Washed it for the first time since I’ve owned it today! It’s been about a year and a half but this paint was already shot when I got it. Considering a Comet wash to further get oxidation off the top layer now.

After stacking 300 bales of hay at 95° and 100% humidity , got the valve covers off and tore up some old t-shirts. Let you know tomorrow...

Use a power buffer and a good polish I recommend turtle wax black polish and then wax you would be surprised at the results . Do not use rubbing compound.

Have you tried any running compound? I wonder if you used something like Mequiar’s Ultimate Compound what it would do to that paint. Just a thought (y) What a great Jeep!

I’ve thought about a few techniques that the internet says will “fix” old single stage paint. A Comet wash seems to be the quickest instant gratification. I figure that if it doesn’t work out it shouldn’t hurt anything anyhow!

I disconnected the ps pump since it whines and is leaking again ( throwing it through the window at flaps later) starts right up 10lbs at idle, idles fine. Noise kicks in about 1800 rpm. Lifters / rockers look good, plenty of oil up top. Revs fine. Ideas?

Are all the accessories disconnected? I’ve had bad power steering pumps and alternators make that noise before.

It really sounds deeper/heavier than a top end issue to me.
