Did a quick search but did not come up with much. Looking to go pick up a flanged 44, missing the tag and I don't know if I can get the owner to count teeth reliably. Did these come with any optional gearing other than 3.73? Thanks

    Centered or offset?
    Offset 70-71 3.73 standard 4.88 optional with the V6. 5.38 and maybe 4.27 with the F134.
    Centered 72-75 3.73 std 4.27 opt.

If you can open the cover, the tooth count will be stamped in the edge of the ring gear. For example, "41 11" is 41/11 = 3.73.

I would imagine that 4.27 and 5.38 came with the 4 cylinder, and 3.73 and 4.88 with the Dauntless.

From the Technical Index pg under Rear Axle:

What axle ratios came stock in my Jeep?
V6 came with 3.73 standard and 4.88 optional. F-head had 5.38 standard in those years, 4.27 optional.

Thank you timgr and Glenn. I will check ring gear when I get there. Seller knows his stuff but is busy and don't want to take up his time.

Best to always pop the cover off any axle you are looking to buy. If an axle is really cheap though leave them on. I once had to pay more for an axle that had a Detroit in it. Seller didn't know it until I pulled the cover.

Almost every one I've seen has 3:73's I did find one in a trencher with 5:38's but only ever one.

And what you find may not be stock. When I put a '71 offset, flanged 44 in my '68 I changed the gearing to 5.38.
