Will This Engine Fit?

Hello, I have a 1966 CJ5 with the F head 4 cylinder engine and the 4 speed transmission. The engine is completely shot, and there is a reasonably priced F head for sale that is coming out of a 1955 CJ5. I ‘m not sure what transmission it has, but I believe the 3 speed was much more common. Will this F head from the 1955 bolt right up to my 1966 with the 4 speed? This might be a stupid question but I figured I’d better ask before I buy it and it won’t fit right in. Thanks for any help!

The only difference would be the '66 F head would have the larger 9.25" and the earlier one has the 8.5" clutch.

 

where in Indiana are you? I'd buy the shot fhead and transmission off you, if you wanted to put the other motor/trans in your jeep.

 

The unasked question: what sort of shape is the replacement engine in? You may end up rebuilding it.

 

But that won’t affect me putting it with the current transmission right?

 

I’m probably going to hang on to it and see if there’s anything I can do when I tear it down, maybe put it in a different jeep my grandpa has. But I’ll let you know!

 

The current owner says it was recently rebuild and runs well!

To be fair, that's what *everybody* selling an engine says.

It's rarely true.

 

X2, "Rebuilt" can range from a $200 rings/bearings/lapped valves job to a $2000 fully machined block/crank, new pistons, cam, lifters, valves, seats, ...etc. job. You're probably not getting the later.

When buying a "rebuilt" engine you might get a runner or you might just get a core. Never expect a fully rebuild engine unless there is proof of it.

 

I just automatically buy a full gasket and seal kit, whenever I buy a "rebuilt" engine from a private party, because I'm going to take it apart and check things before I go dropping it in a rig. I wish I could trust people. But I don't.

JMO - if I could not hear it run, I would look at the plugs and oil and make a guess about condition based on that. If the seller wants a premium price based on condition, I would expect it be set up to run. And then hear it run and look at the fluids. You can cut some corners and put it in the Jeep at little expense. Then measure the compression and start it. That will tell you a lot that you might not see if you take it apart before you run it.

 

The seller said that he will send a video of it running tomorrow, I’ll see if I can post a link in here. Next question will be about paperwork from the rebuild!
