Hi y'all! omg, I'm in an unknown section  I have a problem, I somehow have managed to misplace the winch control box! :madwife::banghead::mad::steamed: I spent 2 hours looking for it! I just don't understand how I could lose it so badly!
That being said, what's an alternative? I was looking at a remote system on Amazon, but had such poor ratings, I know you guys should be able to save the day!? It doesn't have to be a wireless remote, just the cable hand operated one, but wireless could be kind of neat.Oh, I want the control box out of site, like under the hood. I don't want it on the winch motor.
What say you mind dear friends?
    dne' ;)

Unless you want to roll your own it's either find the old one or buy a new one.

Finding the old one will be immensely cheaper.

It should be possible to replace the cables from the box to the motor so you can tuck the box up inside the engine compartment, either just don't make them too long or up the cable size.

I recently did this with the Warn 8274 on my ‘5. I used a contactor instead of the solenoid pack and it fit in a plastic MTM shotgun shell box that I modified and mounted under the hood. I moved the plug for the winch control to the dash in the cab.

Are you asking about the handheld control or the contactors that actually provide the power to the winch?

Talking about wireless makes me think you lost the handheld control.

Not sure how your winch is configured, but my 8274 has a contactor box mounted to the winch that the battery and winch motor connect to. There is a hand held controller that plugs into that box via a connector to operate the winch.

So it sounds like you have misplaced the equivalent of both of those? If it was just the handheld part that would be easier, and is what the wireless controllers replace. Contactor box replacement is a bigger deal as that carries all the current to the motor and has to run it both directions.

Sorry to hear you misplaced it. I hate when I know I have something but can't find it. Actually dealing with that with the license tabs for the truck the boy drives. :banghead:

Is this what you're missing? And the cables too?

Summit has it, but it's pricey. Link

And the link at Summit. Link
Amazon has the controller cable, but it's $92.

    Hopefully you can find yours.

It actually might be cheaper to buy an off brand winch and strip it for parts. You can get an 8000 lb winch for around $200.

How my mind works~ I lay in bed and my brain starts working on the problem, I remember stuffing the parts in a box, visually seeing myself do that. I remember cleaning the remote lead, wrapping it and putting also in the box. I wake up, ran out to the shop, look to the top of my workbench cabinets and see a box which had my bikini top for the Jurassic jeep, but I had installed that already! Aha! Found it! I'm not going crazy!! :bananatool:

However, I do have a question now, I want to put the controller box under the hood, it would be on the passenger side fender towards the radiator, not far from the winch. Obviously the leads I have are are too short, what gauge wire should I use? I'm not very good at determining gauge of wire except welding leads
    thanks everyone!!

I am using a Zeon contactor with my 8274 also. Is there really a reason it needs to be enclosed in anything if mounted under the hood? It appears to be completely sealed. Guess I'll find out. I want to hard wire in-dash controls for it along with a grill mounted plug.

I also installed a 9.5XP motor on it yesterday. A completely bolt-on replacement if you have an 8274 with a splined pinion. You would need to replace the pinion if you have the old keyed style.

How many amps does it draw at stall? That determines the wire gauge. I think most factory units use 2/0.

I put my contactor/control box on the passenger fender next to the radiator to keep the power leads as short as possible. On mine actually ran them into the grill and out to the winch from the middle of the grill.
I do not think the contactor ‘needs’ to be in a box, but I live on the coast and habitually am battling corrosion.

haha, plain sight! You could hear me yesterday almost screaming! lol, not screaming, just perplexed with how something can hide.

So, John, you think 2/0. I can order by the foot on amazon and crimp the ends for a perfect fit. and the little rubber ends/protectors. I'll probably never use the winch, I just want everything to work. I know the winch works as I used it to real the new nylon rope on. Kind of excited about it now;)
    Thanks everyone!

I just crunched the numbers assuming a 4.5 hp motor running at 12 volts & an allowable 1/2 volt drop between the box & winch. The 'ole spreadsheet says #2 gauge leads will work up to 5' but the biggest you can fit into the box would be best. 2/0 for the same length would provide 1/4 volt drop.
