I have a '69 CJ5 with a 225 in it. At hot idle my oil pressure is running right around 15psi, and climbs up to around the 40-45psi range when revving up. I was just wondering what the rest of you guys have as far as idle oil pressure in your 225's, or if I need to check out the oil press relief valve. BTW I'm running 10w-40 in it right now, new manual oil press. gauge, compression good on all cylinders, etc.

When I did my timing chain I bought a new oil pump also. I had 3 springs to choose from for my psi on oil. I went with the white spring. What I ended up with is cold start around 50/60 when below zero outside. Once worm and idle 650rpm/750rpm is around 15/20 psi. 10w30. Motor has around 32000 miles on it.

Rule of thumb is 10lbs per thousand rpm. Your idle psi of 15 is well within the ball park.

Ok, thanks guys. Just wondering if it was something I should check out.

Thanks for the question and information - I replaced a leaky, non-functioning aftermarket mechanical gauge and have been reading pretty much the same pressures as ucdaniel and wondering if I should be concerned. Seems like I can focus my worry on all the other issues now.

What brand of oil filter are you running?

Not sure if this applies to the 225, but the popular orange brand typically gives you a lower hot idle OP than some more well regarded brands. There's a lot of info on the net about oil filter brands.

Buick v-6s are well known for having low oil pressure at hot idle. 15 pounds is more then most for sure especially if it has never been rebuilt.

Your stated oil pressure is just about the same as in my Yellow Barn Find Jeep with unknown mileage on what appeared to be an original D225 engine. No worries mate...
