I just acquired a large index, big hole, transfer case and want to rebuild it. Can anyone recommend a good kit for the rebuild? I took my old one apart and found some wear on the intermediate shaft, I haven't taken the one I bought apart yet, one at a time, but suspect it will need one too.

There will be lots of earlier comments about this question if you search.

In a nutshell, you should buy the kit from Novak or from Herm www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com Pretty sure Herm includes the Novak intermediate shaft. Don't buy the generic kit from the Jeep retailers. Walck's kit may be fine - call them and ask them which bearings, seals and intermediate shaft they use, if you prefer that source.

Herm has done a lot of research on which parts to use in his kits. Give him a call and ask. He has a reputation for talking freely on the phone.

I'll second Timgr's response. Herm and Novak seem to be the only ones that don't use questionable steel on the intermediate shaft. This is based on many testimonials over time and not my personal experience. I ordered my kit from herm the overdrive guy (A.k.a. ATV manufacturing) and was very happy with the kit. There are a few seals if I remember correctly that can be upgraded for better leak protection, but in general either kit will get you where you need to be.

Herm supplies his own shafts with his kit if you pay for the upgrade. He did have a few issues with the shafts but I'm sure he's probably worked that out. I will only use oem shafts or the Novak shafts in my own transfer cases. I've not used Herm's shafts but I've had issues with everything else.

Thanks a lot, I have been unhappy with a lot of the parts I have been getting from some of the vendor's I have used in the past. It is great being part of this forum everyone work together. Thanks again.

I bought a Teralow t-case from Herm and had to replace the intermediate shaft within 1000 miles. Instead of replacing the shaft I went with AA's tapered bearing kit and couldn't be happier. It's a much better design, from an engineering standpoint. After getting no support from Herm on this issue, I won't do business with him again. Just my .02

I agree. Same issue with an Overdrive. (Now I do know now how to get an Overdrive to work if the gear sticks out to far.)

I bought the Novak stuff when I did the T98 and the transfer. Still on a stand but I was very happy with Customer service.

Thanks guys, Novak it will be for me. I don't mind paying, but like to get what I am paying for. Like I said before I have gotten some stuff before that I wouldn't put anyone's Jeep.

Make sure You get Timken Tapered Roller Bearings and Fafnir ( same as Timken Ball Bearings ) or SKF
Ball Bearings. These are of the best quality.

Thanks, I hope I can get the parts from Novak without the bearings, I have a cousin-in -law that runs a Bearing Services Store here by Detroit, so I can get a good price on them. Thanks again, Mel

You have to be careful with that- all manufacturers supply different grades of bearings- there's many different grades but for purposes of going out to a bearing supply place they can be generalized as "economy" or "premium". Herm offers both grades in his kits.

Just because it's a specific brand doesn't mean it's a top quality product. Try a search here, I believe Mike McRuff gave a good overview on this subject in a previous post.

To add to what Howard posted I've seen Timken (my first choice as well) made in USA, Brazil, and China. Run from the China units. USA is my first choice and I've had no problems with the ones made in Brazil.

double-sealed shift rods (Medium).png Some advice...
Since the shifter rods seem to be a source of leakage on the D18, make sure the shafts are polished to mirror smooth finish. Also, the recesses are deep enough you can actually put two seals in each one of them. I did this when I rebuilt mine.

Why does yours have notches, and my 1966, big hole single stick has pins and links?
