Timing Chain Play

In mt search for parts of the fuel pump, I come across this. The timing chain tensioner is touching the chain, but not really doing much. In the one pic it is as it is naturally and the other pic is with me pushing the tensioner to a point where the chain is tight. Is this normal or has the chain stretched or possibly the spring just wore out. 68 odd fire. Thanks tc2.JPG TC1.JPG

That's too loose. Time for a timing set.

It's likely a combination of a stretched chain, worn gears, and possibly a weak tensioner spring. Replace it all.

Actually, looking at your pics, it looks like the tensioner/ spring isn't doing it's job, but either way I'd replace it all. The factory cam gear had nylon teeth, so yours has been replaced at some point, FWIW.

Any suggestions on where to order new timing gear set? Locally O'Reilly, Napa and AutoZone don't have. I just need a basic set. Thanks

It is loose for sure, but the action you are seeing might be from something other than a worn out spring.

If you shut off your engine and the compression from one of the cylinders caused the crank to spin backwards (or a valve spring pushed the cam backwards) just a hair, it will cause a little slack in the driver's side, and it will put a bit of tension against the tensioner.

If all your slack was in the passengers side and the drivers side was tight, nevermind.

Either way, like was said, it all could stand to be replaced since you have it apart. If you have to button it up with just a new tensioner and spring, I know napa can get them for a couple of bucks. I got a new spring and shoe last year.

Not sure if it will have the tensioner assembly but here is the chain and sprockets.
