Hub Caps And Jeep Rims Question

    To all,

I am working on a 6t6 cj5 V6. I have scored on some chrome jeep hub caps, like the baby moon kind, only with the jeep in the middle of three of them and the other two have the cut out for the front hub.

The rims currently on the jeep have three bumps for the hub cap to attach. However the bumps are much to large for these hub caps to fit over.

Does anyone have any photos of the correct rim that these hub caps fit over or on ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Frank

I don't believe any early CJ came with hub caps, except the Surrey models and the Tuxedo Park models.

Picture of the caps? Lacking that, an inside diameter measurement?

There are at least two types of these caps, at least one for the 5-lug wheels and one for the FSJ 6-lug wheels ('74-up Wagoneer, Cherokee and J-10). The diameter is different. The FSJ caps seem to be more plentiful, have a 10.25" ID, and are red, white and blue with the more modern Jeep script.

Also, the factory caps used with Warn hubs have a nicely finished folded edge for the center hole. I have a couple FSJ caps that were cut out for hubs, and the edge of the steel is sharp.

Pretty sure the turbines like the Tux had could be ordered with any Jeep. Certainly they were on the option list by the 70s, and turned R-W-B with the AMC take over. Aren't some of these red-white-gold moons with a turbine trim ring?

Yes. A 2 piece design or version. Never understood why they did this and don't know when they did this. Seems like it would be earlier rather than later. I don't know much about the moon style caps. I always thought they's go on a regular cj5 wheel. I didn't know there were different sizes either.

maybe there is correlation between the red and gold and period matching wheels and the red and blue and their period matching wheels?????

    Tim,

I will go out and take photos of the caps and the rims, and post what I have.

    Thanks,

AFAIK the 15" 5-lug Jeep factory steel wheels - except for the Ren 1 wheels - are all the same in the hubcap acceptance department. The 6-lug wheels are clearly different.

In the meanwhile, you can measure the ID of your caps. If they are 10.25", they are for the 6-lug wheels.

There are two distinct dog dish 1/2 hubcap sizes, one for smaller jeeps (CJ5) and early Wagoneers with 5 lug 15" rims, and one size for the 6 lug 16" truck rims. The smaller ones measure 10 1/2", and the larger ones measure approx 10 3/4", both outer diameter measurments. The 15" Jeep rims have 3 nubs for hubcap retention. The larger hubcaps (10 3/4") will fit well on Ford 15" rims with 4 retaining nubs, by the way.
Question for zootin, are you sure you have original Jeep rims? These are generally identified by the continuous raised lock-ring around the lug area.
The two color patterns correspond to Kaiser era for the red/gold pattern, and AMC era for the red/blue pattern begining in 1972, maybe late 1971. The hubcaps are the same, except for the color.
The separate "turbine" style trim ring is featured in Jeep Wagoneer brochures of the period, but not for the "Universal" Jeep brochures. I'm sure the dealer would sell any accessory a customer wanted.
The full "turbine" wheelcover was featured in both "Universal" and truck brochures of the period, with most, if not all of the Tuxedo Parks receiving them as original, and trucks as an option. The Wagoneers feature the two-piece dog dish hubcaps with the turbine trim rings in the brochures. It is interesting to note the DJ5 "runabout" also received the full turbine hubcaps too. The truck versions of the turbines are 16" and I have only seen two sets over the years. Virtually all the period Tuxedo Park ads and brochures feature the full turbine hubcaps in the pictures/photos.
The Surry Jeeps had a totally different smooth chrome full wheelcover with a W in the center as these Jeeps were offered in the Willys era up to about 1962/3.

Here's a pic of the one piece "Deluxe" hubcaps you could order back in the day. They fit the 15" rim.

    To all,

I can send the photos, one of the rim and one of the hub caps to someone who can post them for me. I am just not getting the hang of posting the photos, even with directions.

    Thanks,

    Frank

These are the factory correct turbine hubcaps that came on the Tuxes originally. Unfortunately, most real Jeep people took them off their Tuxes and threw them away!
