Anyone know what size screws attach the fuel sender ?

Also anyone have photos or know what the factory fittings looked like at the bottom of the tank ?

    My parts book says, "10-32 X 1/2 "

The one with the "hump" is a drain plug...a special double-flare drain plug though if I remember right. The other is a 90 degree brass fitting: Male end threads into the tank, the other end is a female double-flare. I am not where I can verify or get a picture, but will try to get one if someone else does not have one. My '68 is like this, but my '69 is different (has the drain plug, but the fuel feed line comes out the top as part of the sending unit)...in case you are looking for the fittings by year, '68 is probably the latest that will work.

I have a 2 line system, feed and return. NO fitting in the sender

On my 66 it was as Tim E sez only my drain plug was a bolt with a copper washer. I also have the fuel return going in at the top near the sender but not in it. Not using this tank on my jeep at the moment so no pic's.

Interesting, there is no hole for the return in the top of the tank

No problem anyway. Just make sure you have a vented gas cap. I did away with the return when I changed fuel pumps.

So doing some research it appears I need this sending unit from walcks which has the return line

However it has a locking ring for attachment and my tank has 6 holes so apparently I have the wrong tank. And any replacement tank I find for my yr has the 6 holes. Can't find one with the ring lock for my yr. I did find this sending unit for the commando but the float is wrong and it wont give me a true reading

I may be oversimplifying the situation but what is it about the Commando float that would give an inaccurate reading? When I had my 3A years ago I had to bend the float arm itself to adjust the reading to be more accurate when I replaced the unit. I could be WAY off base in applying the Commando unit to a CJ5 but it's worth investigating especially if the bolt holes align and vent line will work.

Why can't I just connect the return line to the bottom of the tank where the drain plug goes won't that work or does the return line have to be at the top of the tank? when starting the Jeep I just stick the 2 lines into a gas can and it works fine

The locking ring tank does indeed have a return line. That's the design the late-60s CJs used. That tank may not be available except in plastic. #0042 here MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep CJ/YJ Gas Tanks

Pretty sure the "ideal" sender with screws and both a pickup and return in the sender was never produced for the CJ. The earlier Jeeps took gas from the bottom of the tank, and the sender had no nipples at all.

My '67 4cyl has a single line coming off the bottom. It looks like the tank pictured. The larger hole is the drain plug. On my '69 V6, there is a drain plug on the bottom but both the feed and return go through the sender. It is the locking ring type.

Wondering if I can just weld a Steel fitting on top of the tank and call it a day ? What gauge steel is the tank ?

I would be more inclined to solder a nipple into the sender. ... Or get the plastic tank. This is not the right tank for a '67 with a V6. Where did you buy it?

Got it from someone on here. This is the only repo tank available. They dont reproduce the v6 steel tank according to walcks and kaiser willys

Here's a possiblity, you'll find some pictures of what I did>>>Replacement steel fuel tank problem It would be good to read the entire thread.

I have the same as your new tank. When I put the V8 in, I needed a larger fuel feed to the engine. I unsoldered the 5/16" fitting and soldered a 3/8" to the bottom of the tank. If you need a fitting in the top, drill a hole and solder in a brass pipe bung in the location of choice. 1/4" pipe is all you need. Drilling the sender and tapping with pipe thread would do the job too.

How did your original feed line attach to the tank on the bottom ? Mine went from steel over the motor to short pcs of rubber gas line attached to plastic line then back to rubber attached to tank using something similar to this

Granted, not sure it was factory

You would still need the tube to go into the tank correct ?
