Pilot Bearing/bushing

So, this is my first rebuild so please bear with my ignorant questions.

I don't recall seeing the pilot bushing when I took the tranny off the engine. Please see the pic below, that is the pilot bushing in the middle of the crank correct?

    Thanks!!

Yep that is it directly in the center of the end of the crank shaft.

Yes, The pilot bushing is the center part with the number 890-014. Before you remove/replace it, measure the inner diameter, and measure the outer diameter of the transmission input shaft to determine if there is enough wear that it actually needs to be replaced.
If you do need to replace it, my trick to remove them is to pack the cavity behind it and in the center FULL of grease, trying to fill all voids. Then take a hardwood dowel the diameter of the trans shaft, insert it in the pilot bearing bore, and smack the dowel with a hammer. The hydraulic force created will pop the pilot bushing out.

If you want to replace it just pack grease in the bushing and get a wood dowel slightly smaller and drive it in and the grease will push the bushing out or you can use a clutch alignment tool to replace the dowel.

Donny beat me to it. :D

I prefer using slightly wet, sliced white bread that I knead into a sort of dough like substance - much less mess than grease and works just the same.

Yep and if you use too much the 225V6 will get hooked on the doh and you won't be able to keep it out of the wheat fields.

    Lol ok thanks guys,

One more quick question. Should the clutch alignment tool fit snugly? Mine has some play when I put the alignment tool in the pilot bushing...

Conventional wisdom says you replace the pilot bushing and throw-out bearing with every clutch service.

The pilot tip needs maybe 0.005" (?) clearance to the pilot bushing. It definitely should slide in easily, but sloppy is not good.

Dorman Products - 690-014 - Cheap - any parts store can get this.

Thanks for that link, I ordered the puller and Dorman and National Bushing... I will use which ever one fits better.

See the pic below for how much play (nearly a 1/4 in.), it almost makes me think its the wrong bushing for the T-14. This crank did come out of a different Dauntless that was in a willies jeep with a bunch of custom stuff, so its possible they had a different trans...

Any tips on inserting the new bushing?

is the tip of the tool the same size as the trans?

My tranny guy (who's done thousands of these) just told me today that when putting the tranny back in with a new bushing put just a little 30wt oil on the tip of the shaft as you put it in. He said the oil soaks into the bushing and lubricates it. He said DO NOT use any grease in there as it will eventually spin out and affect the clutch. Got what it's worth.

You sure? Wrong pilot bushing then. It must support the pilot tip. That much slop will fail, I'd suppose by destroying the trans front main bearing. Pilot tip of the transmission should slide in tight, with only a few thousandths clearance.

Seems more likely you have the wrong tool.

Listing says ID should be 0.593" diam. Get your calipers and measure both the tool and the bearing ID. Possible that bearing is badly hogged out for some reason. Again, that would indicate a problem with the front main bearing of the transmission.

I just double checked it and the tip of the trans matches the tip of the tool almost perfectly according to my calipers. The tool came in the LuK clutch kit for the T-14/Dauntless. Anyone know of another tranny that is commonly used with a wider shaft? Again this crank came out of a different Dauntless in a Frankensteined Jeep.

I added to above. Suggest you measure the bearing ID.

If the crank came from another engine, no telling what transmission was behind it. Pilot bearings are often custom machined for transmission swap applications.

I might have to wait until the puller shows up and I pull it out. My ID arms on the caliper are not long enough...
