Hey all, in the process of installing new bumper/tire carrier on my 70, and was having difficulty getting holes lined up. Noticed that there was a "inner frame cross member" that was sliding around a bit. I'm sure it's factory per the shape, but does anyone know if this was originally tacked in place?, how necessary is it (wondering if it will end up just being a water trap (as you can see, there is a bit of surface rust). I'll clean up and paint before reinstalling, but thought I would ask how necessary it is.
    Thanks in advance IMG_0016.jpg

Depends how hard you pull on stuff. I'd rather not risk bending my frame during a recovery or yanking a stump.

If you are concerned about corrosion, bed it in asphalt/aluminum roof coating.

Thanks for input, I did find a short section in the TSM that mentions this insert to help distribute load when towing. It doesn't tie into the frame at all, just runs between the two frame rivet mounts. I'm going to put it back in, I'll coat it will something first, roof coating might be just the ticket.

The rear frame re-enforcement is an original stock piece of the rear frame crossmember. It should be spot-welded in the backside of the crossmember.

IIRC when you attach the drawbar or maybe a pintle hook, the bolts go through the reinforcement.

Yea, I'll make sure to bolt them together, PO had the bumper/carrier built up and not installed, once I have it on, I'll post a pic (got to do a bit of painting first).
    Thanks, all

Does anyone with a Tux bumper know which of the L\R sets of 4 holes the “Z” brackets attach to on the rear cross member? Mine is aftermarket from Kaiser Willys so there aren’t any holes.

My complete Tux is out of state, so can't view the rear bumper setup in place. I have the mounting brackets and a bumper here. I could assemble the brackets to the bumper and measure the space between the holes. I believe I also have a rear crossmember with the proper holes, so may be able to line up parts on the ground.
If I can tomorrow, I may be able to check the assembly.

Thank you! I don't think you need to go to the trouble of putting yours together, I have a bumper and Z brackets that I can measure. I just wanted to match the measurements I get to the factory holes in someone's cross member to double check and see if the bumper is centered or off center.

Here's it held about where I think it goes with my knees...do the two bolts go on the RH or LH side?

Here's a pic from my reference folder - is this rear bumper on upside down?

From a factory photo of 4 Tuxedo Parks, each one has the extra hole on the drivers side, even for the rear bumper.

I did! And the light. I had the guy who sold me the bumpers throw it all in together.

Gah I didn’t see that! I wonder if he’s still got it. I bet the whole thing went to the junkyard...

Yeah I saved his number and I just reached out to him and he said it is gone, I wish I had thought to ask about those other parts for me or others.

In the good news column I realized that I saved the ends of the old crossmember and used them for hot riveting practice which, while a stupid part to practice on, since I didn't toss it did allow me to measure the holes and get my bumper on.

Awesome! Once the “Z” brackets are attached to the rear bumper, it will show what holes in the cross member are used.
