72 CJ5 muffler and tailpipe hangers

Could someone tell me where the factory mounted the muffler and tailpipe hangers? I am replacing the tailpipe on my 72 and I can't see anyplace where a hanger has ever been bolted. When I bought this Jeep it had a home made metal strap welded to the tailpipe and bolted with one of those self tapping bolts that muffler shops use into a slot in the crossmember near where the emergency brake cables attach.

For what its worth, my jeep is a 75. PO put sidepipes on it a long time ago, soon after purchase. I was under the jeep the other day to replace the driver's side e brake cable, and in order to remove the clamp at the crossmember for the cable, I first had to remove what appears to be the original factory clamp located about 2" from the cable clamp. Sounds like yours is in about the right position.

There probably isn't that much difference between the 72/75.

Thanks for the reply. Was the hanger bolted the the bottom of the crossmember or the front or back side? The reason I ask is there are no holes on the bottom of the crossmember, except for the slot where the PO wedged a self tapping bolt at about a 45 degree angle.

IIRC the front hanger is inline with where the front of the muffler meets the exhaust pipe. There's a bracket sticking out from the frame that the hanger attaches to.

The rear hanger just bolts to the surface of the frame, again IIRC.

I'll go look at my Jeep - no major changes 72-75, so it should be close.

Pic shot looking up, facing the rear of the jeep. Hole on the far right is where the hanger was mounted. Seems like a slot would be better than a hole as you could move it a little as necessary.

That's how I recall my '73 was. That rear hanger is pretty weak - I busted a couple of them, then went to double hangers and double clamps.

My current '75 is different - same hanger locations, but the rear taillpipe hanger is a loop like the muffler hanger pictured above. Hard to say what the front hanger was, as it now has a muffler shop replacement.

Thanks for the pics guys, that pretty much tells me what I needed to know. farfle in the pic you posted the hole to the far right is where mine was mounted however my crossmember only has the stamped hole that is mostly obscured by the upper part of the crossmember which formes a crescent shaped slot where the bolt was wedged at an angle, there is no lower hole that goes all the way through the crossmember.

I'm hoping to revive this thread. I just discovered that the exhaust hanger just above the muffler on my 74 was broken (the double rubber strap had torn through both sides). This meant that my entire exhause system was essentially hanging from the manifold down (the tail pipe has rusted so it's just past the rear axel now and there is no tail pipe hanger). I was going to go with a Walker replacement, but none were readily available so I purchased a ROL universal tail pipe hanger (part #518511 - http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/bu...ust-part-518511-exhaust-hangers-hardware.html) and it seems to work OK. My question is this: the part I pulled off has a bracket with the phrase "360 Swinger" stamped into it which is straddled by two traps that are connected to it with a grommet; the two straps then connect to a hanger that connects to a U-shaped bracket on the exhaust pipe . . . is this part original? If so, might I find it on a DJ from the same time frame? I'm trying to keep my CJ original stock and there is a DJ at my local u-pick-em parts lot. Thanks in advance (Ps. I couldn't get the photo links from Static's post above; hence, the detailed descriptions).

Ok, six cylinder. Sorry, my scanner is down, so I can only describe.

Terminology: manifold -> exhaust pipe -> muffler -> tail pipe.

The exhaust pipe bolts to the manifold. There is a solid bracket mid-way along the exhaust pipe that bolts to the engine or transmission somewhere. There is a hanger at the junction of the exhaust pipe and the muffler. The factory hanger is a loop of reinforced rubber, with a bracket that goes under the muffler clamp. The muffler-to-pipe joints are secured with standard muffler clamps, which are a u-bolt that goes around the pipe. This is a muffler clamp:

It compresses the pipe-to-muffler joint, and also holds the hanger to the pipe. It is common (at least on Jeeps) to double-clamp, orienting the two clamps at 90 degrees to each other.

The middle hanger is kind of like this -

except that the bracket from the bottom of the loop is held to the pipe with a clamp, and the top of the insulator bolts directly to the Jeep - no extra metal bracket.

The muffler connects to the tailpipe with a muffler clamp. The hanger at the end of the tial pipe is a simple strap of insulating reinforced rubber, secured to the pipe with a muffler clamp.

Rear hanger is more-or-less like this:

If you plan to roam amongst the rocks, extra hangers and clamps will keep your exhaust system together.

    Tim,

Thanks for the detailed description. It gives me what I need moving forward.

Wow I can't believe it has been almost 5 years since I started this thread! My 72 has a stud that is welded to the top of the left frame rail with a hole and a cotter pin in the end of it which lines up with the front of the muffler, I remember when I got my Jeep in 98 it had a cable that was broken hanging from that stud, it never occurred to me that it was part of the hanger until I started this thread (I saw another CJ about the same year as mine in a Jeep salvage yard about 2 years ago with the same stud and cable that was connected to the hanger on the front of the muffler) and on the left frame rail behind the left rear tire I found 2 5/16 holes in the frame that had threads in them that lined up with the tail pipe, I used a hanger like the bottom one in the pictures that Tim posted in the rear position.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like you've described what may have been the original hanger. I've ordered a replacement to the 360 Swinger I pulled off of mine as I prefer its design to the ROL product I picked up at the local parts store yesterday. Any ideas on the location of the bracket/hanger that is half way between the muffler and the manifold mentioned by Tim earlier?

My 72 has a bracket that bolts to the front of the bellhousing where the clutch cross shaft bracket connects, I had to modify it a little when I changed my Jeep over to the 73-75 style clutch linkage (72 Jeeps had a cable clutch from the factory)

Mmm. The parts book shows a rigid mount, both 6 and V8, between the manifold and the muffler hanger. This has to go to the drivetrain, not the chassis. If it went to the chassis, the pipe would be stressed at the connection to the manifold, as the engine moves wrt the chassis. Bolting to the bellhousing seems like a likely place for it to attach, but the parts book does not show that explicitly.

Where does the "Y" pipe cross over on the factory setup of a V8?
