Does anyone know what year was the final year for side spare mounts? Thanks.

You might check with Timgr, but I'm almost positive it was 1975. I've never seen a 76 with a sidemount. Big change over year, many many differences.

Mmm. I don't know. Certainly it was available in 1975. I'd guess it continued to the end of the CJ-5 run. The tailgate continued to the end, and there has to be somewhere to put the spare on a Jeep with a tailgate. The only other possibility is that there was a swing-away on every '76 or later CJ-5 with a tailgate, and I don't think there was. If someone has sales literature from '76 or later, that would show it.

    :iagree:

I've seen pics of an 80's CJ-5 with the window sticker that had a side-mount spare within the past few years on E-bay.

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

My dad had a 76 witha side mounted spare. Until he drug it against the side of a trail washout. After that, we had a rear mounted spare.

...which explains why you don't see many, regardless of the year, I guess. I kept mine on the side due to sheer stubbornness, but you always have to be aware of the thing hanging out there. I've had to do a lot of reinforcing with 1/4" aluminum plate inside the fender. Even then, I've come real close to tearing the thing off on more than one occasion.... It really helps if you're smart enough to stay off the ATV trails, though.
