Dauntless HEI conversion

    No, you need to convert the distributor, it's not just the cap. There's a couple threads here on it IIRC.

    i just put 76 buick regal with 231 c.i in the search, and looked under ignition,then distributor. h.t.h :beer:

    Kragen or Oreillys, Cardone HEI distriutor part#
    30-1693 for odd fire with vaccum advance
    30-1694 for even with vaccum advance
    30-1671 for even no vaccum advance
    Cost $124 bucks



    The owner before me put the wrong distributor in probably because he had the wrong coil that made it go bad.

    Can we get all these secret links like the Casting Number, HEI info, Interchangable parts between 225-231 Posted on the top of the forum like the vin post, Im sure it would be a great help to us all and save all of us alot of time.

    All that stuff already is in the tech library which we're working to restore so I don't see any need to duplicate it since it's pretty static info.

    Sorry to jump in here, but perhaps you can help me. I just got my CJ-5 back on the road, but am having problems at higher speeds. Engine has no more power, especially uphill, and seems like it is missing. I completed the HEI conversion and am pretty sure I installed it correctly (TDC compression stroke and correct firning order). Have it timed at 6-8* BTDC and set idle at 700rpm (Haynes says 650-750rpm). I do have the vacuum hooked up (distributor to carb) - why is that not always necessary? Any other reason I could be losing power and getting a little hesitation?

    I don't know how others run without the Vac hooked up. I have always had mine hooked up. I use an adjustable vacuum advance kit (Comp or Crane) and follow THESE instructions.

    Make sure you have the 225 timing cover assembly and not a 231/350 as they work, but you have to adjust for the diff of where 0* is marked. (its easy to tell - if the degrees are part of the housing it's 225, if it looks like they bolt on its 231/350). I have seen this issue with it as the culprit as well.

    We already have that information, like I said, I see no need to duplicate it here as well. We're working to get the site restored, have some patience please!

    It is static information, the years, applications, casting #s etc. aren't going to change. Besides, it's readily available in the forum as well. I'm unsure as to why the OP states that info can't be found with search. I know I've done my own HEI work and found what I needed with a forum search in the past and it was more in-depth than just this thread covers...

    I converted an even fire dist. to odd fire about 4 years ago and haven't had any major problems since. I do not run with the vac advance connected and I don't have the adjustable vacuum advance kit.

    However, the more I read the more it sounds like my performance could be improved with the addition of an adjustable advance kit. Heres 2 links that I have related to this issue.
