Flat Towing

    Hello all,

    Any suggestions on flat towing a CJ-5? I have a buddy who has 79 CJ-5 with a 2inch (i think) shackle lift and 32X12.5 in BFG All Terrains. He hooked up a two bar and did the test run. He had the tranny in 1st and the transfer case in neutral with the steering wheel unlock. When he made a turn the front wheels would not straighten out. Any thoughts, thanks.

    will say this, if the wheels wont straighten up after a turn tie the steering wheel to where they are straight, some will straighten up, some wont, dont ask why, i dont know:?

    Only time I had a problem was making a turn in the sand. The tires wanted to go different ways. (both in) I have learned not to make turns in the sand anymore. Otherwise mine tracks great being flat towed.

    A couple weeks ago I towed the 3B from Greeley to SW of Moab.
    Somewhere around 475 mi. one way.
    I pulled the rear drive shaft, about a 10 min replacement job even with the gnats and rain.
    Steering was fine.

    I always drop the drive shaft, just for my own peace of mind! LIke stated above 10 mins max.

    If you have a PowrLok in the front and leave the hubs locked, the wheels won't straighten out while flat towing.

    Which is better?

    Shaft , no shaft?

    4 wd or 2 wd ?

    Trans in neutral?

    T case in or out ?

    What works for one may not be someone elses answer. The best answer is to buy a trailer and then you can drag home more projects when the wife isn't looking. Also makes it easier to bring home when it breaks.

    Already have a trailer here, just didn't want to drag the extra 2000 lbs.
    I'm already at max GVW in the Mitso. as it is, the extra 5500 lbs is more than I want to chance that far, it only has a 3.9 diesel after all.

    I am going to put this out to the forum as there doesn't seem to be much going on.I have noticed in the passed that some think they need to remove rear driveline to tow.I have a problem understanding why this is needed.I have towed my jeep's thousands of miles by putting the trans in nuetral and the transfercase in neutral.never had a problem.so what is the deal.the rear driveshaft turns and the bearings in the transfercase turn .all well lubricated.It does not harm the differential to free wheel when towing(no load)Any way thats my rant.BTW i have a 2004 TJ with a auto tranny and service manual says put the trans in park and transfer case in nuetral and go.towed 300 miles this way several times ,no problem.OK i got my flame suit on ,go for it.

    Ya I hear what you said. I have a 22 ft. enclosed car hauler that i have used to haul jeep/quads to sand,but i like to travel light when i go hunting.Are hunting area is about 300 mile trip and i have done this many times over 40 years.LETER RIP whats up with those two timken tapered bearing in the bottom of the tranfer case.i think they can stand the strain of turning with no load.what do you think??
