LOOKS GREAT! What were you using to strip the paint? Flap disc? If so what grit?

It took forever to weld because I was worried about warpage.

I used a wire cup on my grinder for the paint. 40 grit flap disc on the welds.

Do I really need to spend $500 on paint? The local paint shop is telling me that. I want a good paint so is this the only way to go? Should I just go get some implement paint and call it good. Got some more searching to do...

i got my paint for about 140 with everything needed to do it and i think i got a half gallon. And i even went over it twice because the first time around it didnt come out so good. It was a single stage paint. Its real car paint so how bad can it be. and i took the leftover back and they put it in a spray can for 6$ for touch ups :)

There's lots of range in price of paint. Ask about the 'fleet' lines. PPG Omni is a value product, popular, and the last time I priced it, it was about $100 for a gallon. Price varies a lot depending on color - white, tan, gray is cheapest, and red or orange metallics are highest (ca $220 in Omni IIRC).

There are a couple of places that sell real catalyzed paint online, like this one http://www.paintforcars.com/

Enlighten me on the steps of automotive paint. I have it down to bare metal in spots but not all. Some is new metal and some is old paint. I was told to put epoxy primer on first and then body filler. Others have said to put the filler first. I have Evercoat metal filler that is supposed to be waterproof. After the epoxy put some high build over the whole jeep then sand and paint. I'm trying to cut down on the steps to make it easier and cheaper. Should I just bite the bullet and do all the steps? I Don't want to do it wrong! Thanks.

Some primers can go under bondo, some can't. Typically, bondo is applied to bare metal roughened with a 20 or 40 grit disk, then primer over that. Go to the PPG site and look at the specs for specific primers. The main problem with epoxy primer is the short overcoat window - if you wait longer than a week or so, you have to sand it for the next coat to stick.

Let me refer you to a couple of places. First, this thread from Corey is fairly comprehensive: http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=44602 Every body man has his own methods, and Corey writes about his.

Also, this book is cheap and really good: http://www.amazon.com/How-Paint-You...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266501712&sr=1-1

I've always done my own body work and taken the car to a one-day shop for color. Next time, I will shoot the paint myself, so I've looked into it quite a lot.

There's some good basic discussion in the e-book you can get here - describes the differences and usages of the various primers, sealers, etc. http://www.autobody101.com/download.php

grind the bare spots bondo sand prime sand paint the finish is only as good as the prep....mort time spent on the under steps the better the top will look...I dont use anything that isnt activated (hardener) no laquer based anything....think of paint like a sandwich, hard on both sides with one piece of meat, pretty solid,a big mac on the other hand is soft in the middle and sloppy, the first is all activated(hard) the second has laquer primer or green spot putty over the hard side and under the other witch would you rather have for a finish.....

Tub and hood are epoxied and most of the body work is done. Fenders are next. I have the 2k primer that will go on this week. Still have not decided on a color.

Great project.......The wheel color is great. Were your wheels chrome or some other finish when you painted them? I would like to paint mine but am concerned the paint will not hold up well on the aluminum finish.
