Would you give me your opinion on t-case/tranny gear clatter?

I have been reading up on the fact that the t-case will take on the tranny fluid so I have been topping off the tranny (almost 1 quart) and still have gear clatter. I had the t-case and tranny rebuilt or so I though at double "A" MCO. Turns out they ordered in the tranny and rebuilt the t-case. As I begin to drive it 100 miles now I have also discovered the tranny pops out of second when I let off the gas. When I put in the clutch the gear noise is loud, more noise at higher speeds, and a vibration around 50 mph. Warranty is past as it sat in the shed while I worked to put it on the road. Didn't get a chance to test it, but then why would I have too? Ha now I know.

Any Ideas on the gear clatter? In addition to having the t-case & tranny rebuilt I put in a new clutch, throw-out bearing, and pilot bushing.

    Thanks,

    Maverick

    Vibration - first check u-joints.

Pops out of second - typical if you have a worn busing on the inside of 2nd gear. You replace the gear and all to fix it. Herm, Novak, R&P - any such place can sell you the part.

Hard to say about the noise. Does it make a of of noise at idle with the clutch out, or just with the clutch in? Is it noisy when you run through the gears with the transfer case in neutral?

Could be a lot of different things.

    Will do on the u-joints.

Bummer on your "second gear" thoughts as it was a rebuilt purchased thru AAMCO. Since it is a T-14 and I have a 1974 V8 donor vehicle would I be the wiser moving that tranny to my rig?

No noise at idle in neutral, stopped with the clutch in, or with the t-case in neutral. The noise starts as I get above 30 mph. Less noise as I accelerate and decelerate lots of noise at that in between spot if that makes sense. Lots of noise at a higher speed just putting in the clutch and coasting. It sounds like a bad throw-out bearing or lack of gear lube.

I hear you on the "Could be a lot of different things" that's why I wanted to bounce this around.

    Thanks,

I see I have put this in the wrong category. Sorry for the poor thread etiquette. How do I move it to Intermediate CJ-5 and CJ-6 Tech?

A moderator will move it for you, once it's noticed.

What transmission do you have now, a T-14?

Since you have a Dana 20 transfer case, the transfer case is disconnected from the transmission when the TC is in neutral. If you run it through all the gears at realistic speeds with the TC in neutral, and there's no noise, that would suggest that the noise is not coming from the transmission. If it is noisy, then the transmission is suspect. Divide and conquer.

Yes I have a T-14, I think it had a six and was converted to an eight. I will try your idea on the gear run with the t-case in neutral. I will have time this weekend, have to replace the gas tank, I sprung a leak. I'll post the results. I remember having this type of noise when my 81 cj5 t-case leaked all its gear lube.

Maverick, moved your post to Intermediates as I see from your profile that this is a '74 we're talking about.

It will be helpful on future questions to identify your vehicle year and item model number (T14 tranny, D20 tcase, etc) at the beginning of your first post.... saves the reader from trying to figure it out or checking your profile. :tea:

Tim is giving you good advice... keep us posted with your findings.
    Good luck!

    Sounds like you got problems.
Ditto on the "U" joints, or a drive shaft outta balance.
the popping outta gear is the bushing, bearing B.A.D..
the noise with the clutch in- trans isn't spinning, throw out beairng spining coild be bad.
Clutch out-neutral- I'm gonna say imput shaft bearing bad.
Going down the road noise, mainshaft bearing or cluster bearing bad, on accelertion the gears make contact on side of the surface, pressure applied to one side, on decel., the back side of the gears are in contact, (the wheels are drivng the trans now), you could have a bad bearing in there causing too much movement of the cluster of main shaft.
Take to cover off and lookie in there, and, or dump the fluid and see if there is any "Reeses Pieces" in there, of the oil has a "metal sheen" to it, it's sick.
They may have put the wrong fluid in, (ATF instead of gear oil??) but that's not the problem, maybe only the cause.
Either way you gotta pull that beast and see what went terrible wrong.
Lucky thing, they are easily rebuilt, all the parts readily avaible, and you've got 100,000,000,000,000 guys on this forum who can help you.

    Just a comment - I would not run a T-14 behind a V8. It's marginal with a 225 or 258, esp. if it's being hot rodded to any degree.

You best/easiest option IMO is to look around for a T-15 from an intermediate CJ. The T-15 is stronger than the T-14, and will hold up to a stock 304 or 360 pretty well. No speed shifting or burnouts, in any case, but normal driving and wheeling should be trouble-free with a T-15. There will be minimal changes to swap in the T-15 - it'll bolt right in, and you may not need to change your driveshaft length.

You might talk to Herm or maybe R&P and see if they have a T-15 for you and will take your T-14(s) as a core.

Here is a thought, could it be the rear diff? I am going to check fluid levels just in case. BTW I have a T-15 with my donor cj5, Didn't understand the one I had was from a 6 until it was rebuilt, oops.

    Thanks,
    Maverick

    T-15 good. Use it.

Yes, possible. Noise from the drivetrain can be hard to localize.

Sorry to ask on this thread, but what would it mean if you do hear noise from the transmission when in neutral with the clutch out?

the noise is only when the cj is moving, over 30 mph.

    Thanks,

I have tried what you suggested. I think it is the transfer case. It seems the clatter and the vibration mirror each other. I went thru the gears with the t-case in neutral and it was fine. I get the clatter around 50 in 2H and I get the clatter around 30 in 4H no issue in 4L. This was rebuilt with less than 100 miles on it. Are they just noisy? Seems too noisy!

They whine, but they don't clatter normally.

Next step would be to disconnect the drive shafts and go through the same process in your driveway, without the axles turning.
