lately there have been afew posts about HEI and #1 plug , I read in one thread of a flucuating miss, mine has always had one , no big deal but it is always there , and it got me thinking maybe my #1 terminal is wrong too ,heres a pic ,pencil is pointing to #1 .it's been in/like that for about 12 years,

to really be:oops: I can't use a timing gun because where the motor likes it is about 1" past the timing marks on the cover. it just has to be a few teeth off, don't think it's a worn timing chain 'cause it runs really welland sort of smooth .

go ahead a tear into me ,,I can handle it:oops:

Grab your fan belt with both hands and rock the engine back and fourth. If the timing chain is badly worn the crank will move easily. If you have the the timing marks lined up you can estimate the amount of slop in the chain by degrees. I replace my chain/gear if it is more than 20*.

where does #1 go to on the cap?does it matter? as long as the firing order is correct.

I was one of the guys on the other post. I pulled my dist. and changed everything to line up just the way it is "supposed to".
It made no difference. I believe that any post can be #1. The rotor makes the dist fire when it first reaches the contact inside the dist cap. In my opinion it doesn't make any difference how long the cap contact is since the rotor only uses the very first part of it.

    Hope I made sense here.

well, IM no engine tunner. but as I understand, you need to bring your #1 piston to top dead center.then on your cap, where the rotor is pointing is where your #1 plug wire go's. hope it helps..

Yes, it DOES matter which terminal on the distributor you use as #1, since the number of degrees between cylinders is not the same between all cylinders as it is with an even-fire engine. In order for it to run correctly you first need to have the engine at TDC on the compression stroke.

Looking at the distributor cap from the top side. there are 4 screws that hold the cap down onto the distributor. In a clockwise direction, there is only one side of the distributor cap where you have a screw, two plug wire towers, another screw and then two more plug towers. If that first screw is at about 8 o-clock when looking down at the cap then #1 should be at about 11 o'clock, or the third plug wire tower (clockwise) past that 8 o'clock screw. With the engine sitting at TDC on the compression stroke the rotor should point toward this tower on the cap.

My experience has been that an odd-fire can appear to run OK with the ignition out of whack, but it will really come alive once you get the thing all sorted out.

<edit> My reference is page # 1-53 of the 1975 MOTOR auto repair manual. ;)

Find the post on the cap you were describing, and trace the wires in a clockwise direction, per the firing order. Looks right!

Hey Steve, by the looks of it I would say yes. Hard to tell from the other picuture Patrick posted, but the number one plug would be the wire to the right looking down on the engine and the most forward plug wire by the valve cover.

I fought with this for awhile... mostly due to my lack of experience with setting timing... then through in the odd fire and I was even worse off.

But here is how I finally did it.
