drove the jeep into town yesterday....on the return trip I noticed the shifting was more difficult. I put it in nuetral but it wouldn't roll freely.....hmmm
I can start it and put in gear...with gas applied it will roll, but let off the gas and it comes to a sudden stop. Will not roll freely in nuetral.....have checked line lock, unlocked rear hubs and wheels turn freely.......seems to shift through gears but not as easy as I'd expect
where to start???? clutch, tranny, rear end............
    thanks, Jim

How hard is it to take the top off the tranny and take a peek inside? I'd start there based on the fact it does not shift as eaisly as you think it should. you could drop the rear driveshaft and push it around and see if it's easy to push.

Or it could be the clutch. My first guess is something in the tranny.

    Hey Jim,
Are you running front disc brakes?

I'll put it up in the air tomorrow ....with linelock set it won't budge.....linelock off and in nuetral it'll move several inches before binding....
Yes front disc........thinking rear end at this point

Other than the hard shifting, it sounds like a rear diff/ gear problem. I've seen a bad ring and pinion act that way more than once.

Had a friend who had his front disc brakes lock up and he could not make it budge.

Think I eliminated that .....with linelock on it won't budge.....with it off it'll roll until slack is taken up in the rearend......haven't put it up in the air yet, maybe tonite or tomorrow.....thanks for the help/ ideas guys

Try putting the transfer case in neutral with the rear hubs locked and see if it is goo/bad. May narrow it down a bit. Transfer case in neutral and it acts up then most likely rear end. If it's improved then that would point to the rear end or possible drive line (U-joints binding, rusted, etc.)

    Still vote for tranny.since:

"I noticed the shifting was more difficult. I put it in nuetral but it wouldn't roll freely.....hmmm....Will not roll freely in nuetral...."

The only thing that causes the shifting to be more difficult is the tranny, unless the driveline is binding up somehow and when you put the transfer case in neutral, it eliminated everything but the tranny or maybe the clutch. But the hard shifting tells me............tranny.

Sorry. I'd say it's upgrade time but with a T-18, there aint much to upgrade too. But at least a rebuild is easy for what it is...........

Man, that really sucks, Jim. I hope you're not pulling the T18 back out. I hope it ends up being something simple.

x2 on the just rebuilt tranny sucking thing if it's what's wrong.....

Really hope it's something simple. But I'm out of suggestions.

Before you pull it out check the mainshaft nut

well good news bad news (but the good is much better than the bad :))......I pulled the OD and found the bowl gear loose, the special retaining washer was beat up and the special clip nowhere in site. Pull the bowl gear then reinstalled and the tranny shifts through the gears smoothly and the driveline can be turned by hand.
I thought I had a extra washer/clip but can't find it....will need to order from Herm.....the bad is I've yet to succeed in getting these installed so the bowl gear doesn't loosen up...REALLY frustrating
Gonna need to flush the OD and TC to make sure there's no metal in the gears, but very happy I don't hafta pull the T18 again
