How many jeeps were built with 4speed they must to be rare? I have bought 2 that the owners said they were 4speeds and they were not. One was a late 60s j2000 that i drove to look at because i was told it was bought it any way. The second one was a 75 cj7 i dont think the owner ever belived me that it wasnt a 4speed. A friends son just got a 82 cj7 and it has one the first one i have seen in person and it came with a extra trans which they were told is just like the one in it but i have not seen it yet. What is the chanes of this?

I have been in the same situation where some people count reverse as a "speed"

    My '74 CJ5 had a T18 4 speed as well.
3 speeds were much more common. Once you get into the 80's CJ7's, many had 5 speeds.

There were a lot of 258 T18 CJs sold. 4-speed. They are not rare.

After 1980, you could not buy a 3-speed Jeep any more. Lots of 4-speed Jeeps after 1980.

What they said. By the way, no such thing as a '75 CJ-7. They didn't start until '76.

So a 5 speed was available in the CJ5 after 82?

T18 is a 4 speed transmission but the first one is more a low range speed than a road speed, i have one and on the road i always start on second. Also the first and the second on a t18 arent synchronised so it's hard to do an easy shift!

I thought the 5's ended production around that time.

Last CJ5 was 1983 model year.
I don't recall if they got the T5, or if they were still running T4/T176 4-speeds (I think they discontinued the SR4 after 1981)

T-5's were installed in CJ-5's. I can't tell you specifically what years though other than after '80 with the switch to the Dana 300.

How much does it hurt the gas milage on a jeep going from a 3 to a 4 speed. On a pickup it is very noticeable.

Going to be determined by tire size, axle gear ratio, power plant, weight of vehicle, terrain driven on, etc.
the 3 and 4 speeds (stock applications) have the same 1:1 high gear ratio so that will be the same top speed/load.

shoudn't change at all, top gear is 1 to 1 ratio in both transmissions, My first jeep was a 75 with a T-18 4 speed with a straight six, I loved it, I owned a couple after that a 74 and 75 both had V8's with 3 speeds, loved them too, but sure missed the 4 speed, I was told back then the 4 speed only came with the straight six if ordered as an option, up to 75, don't know after 75 or before 72.

The mechanical drag of the biger trans uses more power. My dad said it would years ago and he was right. On a 2wd pickup it is very noticeable. I have done it to 2 i have owened and helped others change theirs and it made thiem use more fuel. 3 speed rigs were allways better on gas than automatics and truck trans. I would think it would be true on a Jeep allso.
