You might want to get an adjustable vacuum advance. Read rich mott's article about the difference betweenported vacuum and manifold vacuum.

Thank you. couldn't find that article but I realize that my vacuum to the HEI distributor is coming off the manifold. Thats a constant vacuum. Apparently thats where automatic transmission equipped engines pull the vacuum from. My engine came from an automatic skylark. I will change that to a port above the throttle plate on the carb.

I ran mine at 12-13*, but run at 7500-10K ft. elevation.

Have mine set at 5 btdc with adjustable vacuum. Run a total advance of 38 degrees crank at 3k rpm and my alt is 310 ft. above sea level.

This is important, as altitude has a direct effect on where your timing setting needs to be set.
I'm at 6500 ft & run trails that can get as high as 12,000...I don't recall where I set my initial at, but it was as high as I could get it with out pinging.

No two non ECM engines are going to react the same in regards to Ignition timing......to many variables in condition like cylinder cranking pressure , valve timing , induction systems , weight & gears just to name a few. At altitude where Oxygen is scarce a complete different set of rules apply to an internal combustion motor........things like increased timing, leaner mixtures, more compression and earlier opening intake valve timing are all some of the things that work if faced with running or living in that environment.

As far as Steve's question on timing.........I really don't know why he asked that? I would much rather hear why he is questioning his own timing.

So the provirus owner of my cj5 did the HEI switch and Im not sure if he did it wrong but the vacuum advance I believe is in the way of the mechanical fan running and now I learned that it also gets in the way of the belt for the power steering pump I installed. Any advice here?

Pull the distributor and rotate it a tooth or two to where you have the clearance you need. Don't forget to rotate the oil pump drive to re-align it with the distributor gear.

Would I have to re time it?

Yes - the body moves independent of the shaft and that impacts the timing. If your careful - shouldn't need much, but should be checked.

What are the timing marks supposed to be set at? How many degrees before or after top dead center

its about 8 degrees BEFORE. read the threads about this. there is some important information that pertains to odd fire 225 with the HEI conversion. Warlochs link is what you need to read first and do as it says.

Man is it tough following that link but I think I understand. I posted on that thread to see if my thoughts were correct
