tappet noise

    I would appreciate some of you listening to my f-head and tell me if the tappets are too loose and if so how to tell which one(s) is the culprit.

    I seem to have heard some noise, but I couldn't really tell if it sounded excessive. I doubt you'll ever be able to complete eliminate noise due to the all mechanical nature of the valve train. Rather than trying to isolate which is noisy just do a complete valve adjustment and then there won't be any question.

    Actually, I had just finished adjusting everything and it sounds the same as it did before.
    I hope that it sounds normal.

    Hopefully others will chime in, but to me it didn't really seem to have excessive noise. Have you run it with the valve cover off to make sure the rocker arm is getting lubricated good? Just letting it idle and watch the oil flow?

    I didn't run it with the valve cover off but everything seemed well lubricated when I adjusted the valves.

    For what it is worth, I adjusted mine after a rebuild and I can barely hear them. They do sound a bit loud to me.

    There are other sources of tapping noises; exhaust leaks, loose spark plug, fuel pump, likely others. Mechanic's stethoscope is cheap from Harbor Freight, and may help to isolate teh noise.

    Run them with both the covers off just to watch it work. The rotating lifters are cool.

    I may have found the source of my concern. My genuine made in Taiwan exhaust system from Walcks appears to be leaking below the manifold where the flange is welded to the down pipe.

    A little welding on the down pipe flange. Do you think it sounds OK?

    Have you tried removing the fan belt and running it? That should make it much quieter, eliminate any belt noise. Another issue is the fact that you don't have a radiator and can't let it run and warm up might be fooling you. Maybe it will get quieter when it warms up.
