1970 cj5....what parts to loot for my 55?

    waynaferd Hey, ya'll watch this!!

Just picked up an abandoned project....1970 cj, dauntless V6, new 2.5 lift, shackles, and new brakes with SS brake lines

Those alone are worth more than I paid for the jeep, and why I bought it actually

But wondering if the steering and axles would be worth swapping into my 55?

The 70 frame has some hacks or I would just put my tub on it and save some work, but am pulling the suspension out and wondering if I may as well keep the axles hooked to it

Also if I can convert the 70 tcase to my twin stick, or just swap tcases, or swap tranny and tcase with the V6

Had this stuffed in the corner for a few years and started tinkering again this past fall, and now I bought a whole parts jeep so things are getting serious lol

    Thanks a whole bunch!!!!

Any chance it has the offset flanged axle? The dual pot master cylinder bracket is worth keeping also if you still have a single master cylinder.

I guess I'm not sure on the flanged axle....the rear hub has a notch inside the hole of the rim...not a big thing sticking out like my 55....I will check tomorrow and maybe even figure out picture posting lol.

Case on the transfer cases will be different, but you can pull the front shift fork housing parts and swap them between cases.

V6 ross steeeing box should be larger. Hard to find parts for that one but they are bigger.

Yup, pull engine mounts off frame and mc bracket

Sounds like you scored a flanged axle (y)

I think you have the flanged axle.

Didn't all the 1970 CJ5s have the flanged, offset D44 rear axle??

From what I understand it was a mixed bag.

Early, no, late yes. I've seen a few late '69's with them also but not common. More a convenience with gearing needed for the factory with what was on hand imho.

Well heck....seems the deal got even better lol

Took it off the tow dolly last night and the pass side wheel was binding somewhere...hub was unlocked and D shaft wasnt turning, and there wasn't any grinding/grumbling like it was the brake sticking

anyways, thanks for all the info and help so far!!!

I think we have it narrowed gown to all the 3.73s after April of 1970 had the flanged axle. The 4.88s seem hit and miss. There are some 69s with 4.88 that are flanged as Nick said above. Of course over the last 45 years many swaps have taken place so nothing is absolute. Many 69 Jeeps are titled as 70 or 71 also to add to the confusion so serial number breaks work much better then a number on a title. One absolute in Jeeps is that you can never say never or always when it came to whoever they could beg borrow or steal parts from that week to keep production rolling.

I got them pulled out this morning but haven't looked at tags or counted tire turns to drive shaft turns to see what gearing may be

But it is definitely a big ole pumpkin on the rear lol

Got it on jack stands tho, hoping to pull the body then drivetrain soon, then get rid of what's not needed before the neighbors complain lol

The exhaust manifolds were off the motor, but dunno if it let moisture in to start rusting internals....kinda want to rebuild it as a winter project either way....I like that stuff
