My 44 Limited Slip, Slipping Too Much?

    The tires now bite pretty good. In mud both wheeles dig. But on rock, if one tire gets in some mud or something slick, sometimes only 1 wheel spins.
    I bought the carrier used, a couple years ago from a jeep shop .
    I did add the additive for limited slip rears.
    Is it time for a rebuild?
    Where to buy parts?
    I've set up gears before, but never built a posi carrier?
    Is it a bad job? Any special tools required?

    What limited slip do you have in there? TracLok, PowrLok, lunchbox locker? You've got to know what your working with.

    What type of LSD did you buy? Is your D44 the 30sline one piece axles (flanged) or the 19 spline tapered? My 1970 came with the 30spline version, and while that was nice OEM improvement, the 30spline came with the almost useless Trac Loc LSD as opposed to the highly regarded Powr Lok in the 19spline.

    It probably does need a rebuild, but an LSD has definite limitations (until you rebuild it so tight it acts more like a spool and you lose the benifits of the LSD). My $.02, if you're expecting it to perform like a locker, swap it out for a locker.

    A '70 with flanged axles came with the TracLock optional. They were never very aggressive to start (they are nice on the street), and they wear out pretty fast. You can rebuild them with new plates and make them a lot better, but they will never operate like a locker. That's the definition of limited slip - it will slip if one wheel is in the air. Some are better than others, but none will operate like a locker (selectable or not) and deliver power to one side when the opposite wheel is hanging.

    One way to overcome that situation is to hit the brake pedal...hard.
    Quick hard jabs will make the unit drive the other wheel.
    Yes, it's not always possible in certain situations... 3 pedals and only 2 feet.

    hand throttle has helped me with this....allows for one foot on brake, and one letting out clutch while still keeping the throttle up enough

    That likely would be a TracLock, unless someone has swapped something else since new.
    New frictions and steels are available to rebuild that.

    I bought the posi carrier used from our local jeep shop.
    Mine was open diff when I got it.
    All he ask was my gear ratio.
    Can I id it by pulling the cover, to order the right kit?
    What do I look for to id?
    It was a true drop in install. I was prepared to reset the gear teeth pattern, but it was dead on.

    The shape of the case will tell what you have. If you open it up and get a view (photo) of the case just inboard of the ring gear, we should be able to identify what you have. The TracLocks sometimes have the name cast in the side where the ring gear bolts go in from.

    A TracLock is easy to identify from a picture.

    Since mine was a drop in, and came from another jeep 44 donar, what else could it be?
    If I could order the correct parts before I pull the cover, it would save me down time?
    It was an oem , out of a customer of the jeep shop, who upgraded to a locker.

    I would not assume that the shop installed the TracLock. Lots of Jeeps have aftermarket LSDs or lockers installed, and the donor could have been one of those. I would take the cover off and look, and then post a picture if I weren't sure.

    If you want to test how bad it is, jack up the rear end with it in gear and spin a tire by hand. If it's not worn out, it won't spin, or not easily at least. If it is worn out, it will spin one way while your other wheel spins the other way.

    If it only goes one way but not the other and clicks, you have a locker... but it would have to be nearly destroyed to have the symptoms you described.

    Just now did a break away test? One wheel off ground, tranny in N, guess it takes bout 20lbs force to turn tire?
    No clicking or any other noise?
    I'll pull cover soon and pic.
    Ps-what both my other limited slips, 1 amc 20, 1 Gm 12 bolt, both so tight I can't break away by hand. Bet this one's wore out?

    What traction aiding Device you have before moving forward. You are asking people to guess based on incomplete information. Once people know what you have then better advice can be forthcoming.

    Don't c any markings on carrier?

    That's a trac lok. Google for rebuild videos. It's easy, but there's a process.
