Np435 What Did I Just Buy?

@NeedsRusteze74 just bought this NP435 with a cool adapter for the Dana 20 tcase. I believe that's a Chevy bell housing so that's gotta go. This will go in his 74 CJ5 with AMC 304. We know the pilot bushing needs to be changed but that exhausts our knowledge.

Can his existing bell housing be used with some drilling and tapping?

What can you tell us about this purchase and getting it mated to a 304? All observations and thoughts welcome. Thanks.

I’ll bet a Chevy engine swap will be easier. And better. :sneak::twist:

 At his age I think he exhausted his entire Taco Bell budget for the year to get this granny low tranny so probably not an option.

The bell with a '74 T-15 is too deep for the Ford input shaft. You need the bell for a '76-79 CJ with a T-150, or a '80-up Jeep with a T-176/7/8. Nick says the bell from a '80-up 258/304 CJ with a SR-4, T-4 or T-5 is the same casting and will work if redrilled.

Novak has a page - The Novak Guide to the New Process 435 Transmission - this will link to other relevant pages.

With the right bell that's a bolt in deal. Aside from the pilot bushing, he'll need a clutch disc with splines that match the 435 and a pressure plate for the 304 flywheel.

Locally I would check with Capital Clutch and Brake in West Sac, rather than FLAPS.

I've had my eye out for a bell you guys but haven't come across one locally yet. There were some on ebay, but they cost more than a few tacos.

The SR-4, T4/5 bell option Tim mentioned is one I wasn't aware of.

These bellhousings are a popular item for swaps, and are being reproduced. Omix Bellhousing for T150 or T176 Not cheap though.

Note that the '80s Cherokees, Wagoneers and J-10s got the T-17x for several years with both the 258 and 360. There were also '82-3ish Cherokees sold with the 258/T-5. This might be another source in the yards, or maybe the WTB pages on the respective forums. Or check with Daryl.

I presume it's from a Ford. "The Ford NP435 has a 1-1/16" diameter, ten spline input shaft that has a stick-out of 6-1/2" from the front face of the transmission."

I recently did this swap. that adapter looks homemade wondering as to how the output is all hooked together. I used a t150 bell.

I was thinking the same thing, homemade. From the little that is visible it almost looks like an AA T18 to D20 adapter plate.

The original tail shaft Seemed like it would stick out too far for that thin adaptor.

My thoughts too, wonder if that might be the reason for the extra long tail shaft housing?

Looks like T-14/T-15 pattern from here, that is, no.

From T18 to bellhousing bolt question... - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum (interesting thread in its own right)

This is a picture of a T-150 bellhousing that you want. The two lower arrows point to the holes added for a Jeep T-18 - ignore those. Instead look at the faint outline of the original transmissionat the tip of the lower right arrow. This is the Ford "butterfly" pattern that you want. The holes at the two arrows at the top and unmarked at the extreme lower left and right are what you would use.

Below is a T-14/T-15 pattern bell, squarish but a lot larger than the T-90 square pattern. This bell was also used with a plate adapter to the T-18 through 1975 in CJs and through 1979 in J-trucks and Wagoneers, regardless of engine type.

Famous last words. When I did mine I ran into an issue with driven disk to bearing snout clearance. Had to trim the retainer a little.

Did the Craigs guy just sell the bell? Or did rusteze have to buy the trans he was selling too?

If you guys need a hand let me know, I have a trans jack you can borrow.

He was willing to just sell the bell for $100. Not a bad deal I guess. The seller had a Scrambler on 1 ton's which I'm assuming is what this bell is off of.

    I say $100 isn't bad, I paid 150 for mine 20 something years ago.
