T15 Transmission

I have a t15 transmission from my 73 cj5 that I am rebuilding . I am having trouble getting the answers to my questions. Hopefully some one here can help me.First I read there should be 21 rollers in the input shaft. Is there supposed to be that space. I bought new rollers with the same out come of that space that looks like a roller should go, but does not fit.Also do I have the Bearing Retainer Washer on correct

 

The shield washer is correct as shown.
You don't want the washer rubbing against the side of the bearing when it spins.
That shield washer needs to be flat it appears to be warped.

If the maindrive pilot bearings have minimal play then you should be good to go.
Or you can use a caliper to compare the replacement needle diameter to the to the old originals.

 

The book states 21 pilot rollers.
The last one usually has to be inserted end first.

That's exactly what I was wondering.
I was thinking it should have an odd number of needles too.

And yes the present gap as shown does look to be somewhat large.

 

The part number for the rollers is 941659 (use 3208152). Crown sells these under the first number. I would check all of them with a micrometer, and compare to the old rollers.

I have been told that wear in the input shaft pocket is a common failure for the T-18; possible for the T-15? If the pocket is wallowed out, new replacement rollers in the worn pocket will leave an overly large gap, like we see here. Looks wrong to me, but I have not been into a T-15 in a long time.

I would try the main shaft in the pocket with the rollers and see whether it's loose.

 

I see 21 rollers in the photo, didn't count before comment.
T15 shares the same part number with T86 for pilot rollers.
Seems replacements would then be readily available.
You might try from a different supplier.
So much of this is made off shore; maybe that's the problem here.

 

Federal Mogul Catalog 510-1 dated 1995
Shows Warner t15 main shaft pilot bearing 22- each QAR35319 , 1971 to 1979.
Dimensions are .1562 diameter .656 long .
also shows t14 and t86 use 21 each 1966 to 1975 .

 

That can't be right.
The Jeep Universal Parts Catalog (UPC) definitely states 21 needles for the T15.
Part # 941659 qty 21.
If you put 22 needles in, then they would have to be smaller in diameter.
That would cause the maindrive to mainshaft fitment to be sloppy and loose.

I say stay with 21 needles. I have a T15 mainshaft that is available / for sale.
I can easily check the input diameter if that helps with anything.

 

Yes, my '74-80 AMC/Jeep parts book shows the same roller for the T-14 and T-15 and the same number used, 21. The factory books can be mistaken, but they are mistaken less often than aftermarket books.

The rollers should look like this. If the rollers are the right diameter, the main shaft pilot fits loosely, and the main shaft pilot matches the measurement oldtime offered to get for you, you have to condemn the input shaft.

 

I put in new roller. There is a small gap. Will this be ok

21 count and the gap looks normal to me.
