That is how my 71 is, (has the upper portion of the axle bump stop and both the frame bump stops). It was built in April 71, I believe May 71 was the end of the line for the early CJ5'S.

My 71 is the same too. Until this thread, I thought a previous owner added them with the lift springs.

My 75 has them as well, or at least the passenger one. The driver's side one apparently rusted out and rubber part fell off at some point.:D

Haven't we gone through this before? All the Intermediates have them on both sides. It was my understanding that they change the geometry of the axle travel (aiming the pinion more down), to keep the driveshaft from hitting the starter in extreme compression. Jeep PN 998730, 2ea '74-75 (and I assume '72-73 too). This number implies a '70ish AMC(?) origin. The rubber bumper is still available, 931263, which is 1955-60ish Kaiser(?) I would guess. I do see that a discussion was had before in the "what is this" and judging by the responses of guys that have the 71's, I was not alone in thinking that a PO had installed them for what ever reason until it was pointed out that they were indeed factory.

The point I was trying to make is that both of my parts catalog's R2 and the R3 which is a May of 71 catalog, do not show this part at all (I included pics of both parts books to verify this) and yet here it is on all 71 models. I need to replace the two rubber bump stops on them and am going to source the pn you included above and see if it matches up to my originals. Thank you for posting that information up timgr
