Need Quieter Mufflers, Which Ones?

I've had enough of these cherry bombs, would really like to get my Dauntless at least 50% less obnoxious in the noise department. Like all of us, I don't have much room. I'm running dual 2.5" exhaust all the way out the back (pay no attention to the left side being lower... you've probably had too many wobble pops today).

Anyway what's a really quiet and compact muffler that will fit under these Jeeps?

Here's one of the cherry bombs, the back of the muffler is right where exhaust starts to turn up to make it over the rear axle and out to other side of frame.

Why do you say that? Turbo mufflers typically have a good noise to horsepower tradeoff. The Walker Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers I had on my Mustang made more power than the Flowmasters that were on it before and you could actually have a conversation at freeway speeds. Well, until you got into it.

Couldn't hurt to go to your local exhaust shop and poke through the junk pile. I found a small diameter cylindrical muffler that still gave a decent sound (as decent as you can get with 4 angry squirrels) and was quiet enough to hear yourself think while doing higher speeds.

    It looked like this.

I have flowmaster series 40s on my 55 chevy and love them. Not super loud, but still sound great. I have series 10 flowmasters on my 225 and they aren't bad either. Neither are round like what you want, but the 10's are small.

I too have had good results with turbo's. Quieter than a glass pack with little back pressure.
Otherwise, Walker is a known brand name in exhaust and makes a number of smaller quiet mufflers.

RATTYFLATTY I think you need a little more throttle

I'm running a single Cherry Bomb brand Turbo muffler on mine. Yes they do take up some real estate compared to a straight through design but you can't beat the turbo style for making things quieter.

Back when I was researching everything I could find that was ever written about mufflers and posted on the internet, I learned that turbo mufflers have 3 or less chambers and are designed for less back pressure at the expense of sound.

Standard chamber mufflers have around 5 chambers, and chamber/absorptive mufflers are quietest with both chambers to cancel sound waves, and matting material to absorb what sound is left.

Turbos are a step better than cherry bombs, but still pretty loud on the overall graph.

@Muzikp , read the fine print on the ones you posted, and research which ones you actually want. There are very different options within the link you supplied: “You can choose from several internal construction options, including baffled, louvered tube (with or without packing), and turbo-style.

If you’re really after something whisper quiet, I’d suggest finding something that will fit from a junkyard that’s on a car or truck. Nothing aftermarket will compare to what comes factory, and there are some really uniquely-shaped mufflers out there. You might find one that fits better than anything could from summit.

I used to run 4(!) cheap turbo mufflers on my dump truck, and it still gave me headaches. I replaced all four with a weird cube-shaped muffler that came off a car that I scrapped, and it’s ridiculously quiet now. Flow isn’t really an issue with the little 2bbl carb that it breathes through.

My experience with rear exit is that the exhaust gets sucked right back into the Jeep. The Walker turbo's are what is on my CJ 5. I find them completely satisfactory and they have lasted a long time. Definitely more quite than the similar looking/sized Borla's on my 3B. The Borla's are ok until you put your foot in it a bit.

I use a single Dynomax 2.5 inch muffler on Farm Jeep Willy. It's quiet. Pretty much sounds stock. No rattle, no droning.

I had turbo mufflers run all the way out the back on my Dauntless. I didn't think they were too loud. Just a nice burble.

I like how one of the POs years ago set up my duals. Not sure what mufflers they are but sound good. They have old wraps as they are right below the seats and more importantly the fuel tank. o_O

I have Flow Masters exiting in front of the rear tires and run headers. I guess I'm old now because this thing bothers me to drive anymore. LOUD.

I think I'll give the Turbos a try but until I can get the exhaust out the back, I think it will still be too loud. I'm just over the noise thing. And maybe over the hill too.

The walker website shows a bunch of round tractor mufflers. I wonder how loud they would be. I like the round design instead of an oval shape.

I had a Flow Master and it was loud. I now have a Magnaflow. It's a lot quieter except when you put the skinny pedal to the floor.

I use Walker Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. One of the reviews said they weren't much louder than stock. I was sold. Ron

I'm runnin a single Flowmaster 50 series on my 3B and on my CJ6. I don't think it is too loud for a Jeep with a rag top and no doors. But then I am half deaf anyway, just ask my wife.
