Wheel Recommendations...

    My BT3-C came with 15x ? spoked and 16X6 (military) wheels as part of the deal. I'm looking to put some factory (JEEP) type 15 inch wheels on it but want some recommendations as to where to get them from. I'm not too concerned with an accurate restoration, just a functional (stock appearing) trailer. The 16 inchers are cool, but tire choices (load range "C") are not as plentiful as for 15's... Anyone have a trade?

    i am in the same boat, sort of. i have 15x10s on the traielr and need smaller rims like 15x8. It should be easy for you to find a set of 15x8

    16" were stock...what size/type/brand of tire are you considering? Something like a 225/75/16 or 215/85/16 may be okay with what you have.

    As for 15" original jeep wheels, post in the wtb here. Many of us have a few of those laying.

    As long as you aren't looking for the late CJ ('77-'86) rims that work with disc brakes, you should have no problem finding rims. What is the center hole diameter that you will need?

    Thanks for the feedback! The bolt pattern is 5 X 5.5 (center hole). Will post in the WTB if I can't find suitable load range "C" tires for the 16's...:rofl:

    Chris, why do you need load range "C" tires? The little trailers are pretty much rated to only haul 700 lbs. I think light truck tires will handle that just fine

    From what I gather on the trailer list, these trailers are/were underrated mostly to make sure they floated with a full load.

    I pretty much consider mine a 1/2 ton trailer, limited more by size and lack of brakes than anything..

    In military form they are 1/4 so they could float in civi form 1/2 ton gross.
    They weigh 500lbs so they are rated to carry 500 lbs, meaning car tires would work. Mine are the original Firestone bias ply 6.0x16's w/ tubes. I've had an F head in the back w/ plywood over the floor. Works great!

    Most taller/skinnier 16" tires will be load range D or even E. They are made for dually setups. The 235/85/16's on my JEEP are load range E. I put some generic AT's on my Bantam. They were rated at about 1800 lbs/tire. Seems like enough to me.

    Will radial tires work on a rim originally set up for tube type tires?

    Yup, no issues there. The biggest thing with old "tube type" rims is that many of them will not hold air without a tube, as they are not sealed, nor do they have the correct-sized hole in the rim for the tubeless valve. You can run tubes in tubeless tires with no problem.

    Also, military trailers are rated just like military vehicles; a 1/4-ton trailer is rated for 1/4-ton (500 lbs) for cross-country (off-road) use. For over-the-road use, that figure is normally double.

    IIRC, on the data plate on my M416 it states 500 lbs. off road and 950 lbs. on the hi-way. My would be original and complete if it had OEM wheels and tires. Right now it has the old Ford "Big Hole" wheels on it.

    FWIW I used the stock 16" wheels and had them powder coated. I used STA NDT military 7.00x16 tube tires, makes for great ground clearance!
