Hey a quick question about flywheels & ring gears.
Are ring gears interchangeable between flywheels or are they flywheel specific?
What yrs were the different flywheel / ring gear combos available?
    Any yr overlaps?
I keep all this info in my Jeep folders & I don't recall this subject discussed in relation to the Toyo starter mod.
    Thanks!

MB, GPW, CJ2A and very early CJ3A's had smaller ring gears. These are easily identified by the bell housing which has the starter bushing built in. From 1950 and up, the starters were self supported and the ring gear size was increased. The toyota starter only works with the 1950 and up flywheels. See my post in my build thread about the hard way of figuring this out. Ted is a 1949 3A, so he had a lot of leftover 2A parts, one being the small flywheel and older starter. Also, in the CJ5 era, the change was made from a 8.5" clutch to a 9.25" clutch, ring gear stayed the same.

The 9.25" clutch was ONLY an option in the 60's The Toyota Starter works with the 129 tooth ring gear and the Later 3A bell housing (the one with 3) 5/16" bolt holes on either side (used with the M-38 Waterproof Clutch) I have a 9.25" clutch added to my Late (dual hole drilled flywheel that will take either clutch) 129 tooth ring gear and Late Bellhousing. It works perfectly. I only had to ream out the top mounting bolt to about 7/16 for it to fit.

I think it actually came along a bit earlier than that, I had one on a '59 CJ6.

Had some kind of a strange hieroglyphic type marking on the flywheel that I've never been able to decipher.
