What size is it, and where can I find a socket for it? As best I can tell, it looks like about 2 3/32 inches, but I can't find a socket that size anywhere in town. Its a D30 on a '74.

The Jeep suppliers carry a special socket for that nut - call someone like Four Wheel Drive Hardware.

  3. A well stocked napa can get you one as well.

Thanks. I'll check with 4wd. Napa said they could order one, but it would be about $30. That just seems like a lot for a tool I'm not going to use very often.

Well, you can use a hammer and chisel. Bend back the locking tab and tap on the corner of the nut with the chisel. This will leave unsightly gouges in the corners of the nuts, if you care.

I had contemplated doing that, but I wasn't sure how well it would work. I was just going to repack the wheel bearings, so it isn't anything urgent enough to try something that drastic.

use a dull chisel. a sharp one will dig in. a punch works too.

You can go with the chisel but IMO you are asking for trouble when you go to tighten it back up when you reassemble. You need to torque it insise nut down and then adjust back out to get the bearings seated properly difficult to do with a chisel. 4WD hardware sells theirs for like $10 I believe that is a much better way to go. 8)
