Family CJ6 Project

Well, I said I'd eventually have pics. They aren't too good....black undercarriage+poor lighting+garage like a dungeon with no sun outside makes for crappy picture taking. I'll get some more with some better lighting. Working on some ford spindles/waggy backing plates (got wrong ones first time)and such now. Been away from the forum for a bit, school and work interrupting. Hopefully can make some headway now.

Thanks everyone. Have to paint some sandblasted stuff this weekend (Backing plates version 2, hubs and such. Also did my windshield, tailgate, and hood hinges.) Sending some front inner shafts to get shortened for the 44. Also building a steel Noel candle for the Eynon Christmas Light Fund Drive, 6 feet tall. Yeah, that's unrelated to the Jeep.

 

That paint looks great! I'm going to have to give Majic tractor paints a shot on my frame and trailer coatings

OK, I looked through here for a while today, and I can't find what I'm looking for. I have wagoneer backing plates, 1991 Ford F-150 spindles, hubs, and rotors. The rotors I have are used and a little thinner than new, and the brake pad barely fit in. If the rotor was new, it wouldn't have fit. Should I get 78 CJ rotors, which are a bit less deep, and have the center hole machined out to fit? I did this conversion before on the front of my 85 CJ 7 with the same parts, and I'd swear it all fit...

 

Found my troubles. The spindles that I had machined for the back, and also are using on the front started life as 1991 Ford parts. Ordered some spindles from R&P yesterday from early Chebby. Apparently they are just a bit different, and the pad will (should) go right in. Last time I did this conversion, (front of my old CJ-7) I must have lucked out at the crusher pile and scrounged the right parts all at once.

 

Was just reading your last post and was going to suggest the small Chev spindles, then I see this post and you've got it figured out . You will need to use Ford or Chev outer axles for this conversion but if you've done it before you probably know that.

 

I've got both Chev and Ford outers in the shed. Going to use Ford ones, with clip on end. I think that is the combo I used last time.

There will be more pics soon, body is painted underneath now, but still raw aluminum on top. My home computer is done for, so the only access is when I have extra time at college, which is not too often lately. I've got only a few weeks left until I get my degree, and finals are looming so time is really of the essence for me lately. Just for an update, the Moser axleshafts are in the back, all the brake lines except the master to prop. valve are plumbed, all shocks are on, and hopefully it'll be sitting on its wheels today.

 

Scored 2 fenders for 35.00 each. Driving through the local junkyard, when I noticed a postal Jeep that's been there for as long as I remember. I can't believe that I never noticed them before. They looked metal, with rust streaks running down them, but that was from the hood and marker light nonsense. Whoo Hoo!

 

Ok,looked at this thread I started way back and I see I need to post lots of recent pics and updates. The -6 runs and drives, and is now Fountain Green. Sits on some used 31inch swamper radials (cause I had 'em) and a 2.5 inch BDS lift. Stay tuned!

Man when I started on My CJ 6 I didn't know CJ 6s were so popalur. Nice Job Keep up the good work. First time I have checked out the thread, but I did notice a picture of you grinding with no safety wear, please use it. Much more ambitous way of building one than I am doing.
