Thanks. I took it around the property and got on it a little in 2nd, almost lost it and I have been driving Jeeps since I was 9yrs old. Wow. Told Jr to be careful.

I think 33" would work well and he has the room as well as HD springs. Whoever bought this new got everything they could on it seems like.

When Jr's Jeep is warm (running temp) the right bank on the v8 starts to smoke.
When it is cold it does not smoke.

This is indicating to me that it is valve guides and not the oil rings (we will still do a compression test).

    What say ye?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Also, on the back of Jr's Jeep it has these brackets (spare tire carrier I think) and they look stock.

Are these the old paper clip type brackets?

Maybe I can fab up a carrier unless I can find one.

He wants a carrier and not a side mount due to hitting stuff when wheeling.

    Any ideas where to look?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Whitco carrier. http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthread.php?66132-renegade-1-spare-tire-carrier

Jeep Authorized Special Equipment. Likely dealer installed, or by the owner. You could get the special equipment delivered with the Jeep, but IME it was seldom done due to the risk of theft en route and the sloppy installation by the factory.

Also, IME, these carriers are not strong enough to hold a big tire. They either break out the body or break off at the mount.

IMO it won't fit. They have the year range wrong. There's no reason to think it will fit a '74 and not fit a '72 or '73. Year range should read '76 up.

Just in general - everything changed for the 1976 model year - it was a complete redesign. There are only rare exceptions, aside from the engine, transfer case and front axle, of parts that will fit a '76 and also fit earlier Jeeps. Very little aftermarket support exists for the intermediate Jeeps ('72-'75) other than maintenance parts.

Likely the seller is simply ignorant of the differences in the model years, and made a guess about which years the kit will fit. The pedals and brake booster bracket, brake lines, etc etc are completely different from what Jr's Jeep would have had if it were equipped with power brakes from the factory. I think you best bet is to buy a hot rod booster from Summit or Jegs and make it work, or scrounge parts in the junkyard to put together something. You could make this kit work, but you'd be paying a premium for a kit that isn't much different from what you could get at the junkyard.

Looking at the parts book, it might fit. You may have to make a new link between the bracket and the pedal. You'd be on the hook for shipping, even if it doesn't fit your application. Look under Jr's Jeep and see if it has a prop valve now - it should - parts book says it does. Read the '74 TSM about the combination valve. If you don't change from drum to disk and don't change the sizes of the wheel cylinders, you should not change any proportioning valve. Use a master cylinder that is made for drum/drum or disk/disk applications. A disk/drum MC will probably have an extra valve in the MC which you do not want.

I'd go to the junkyard and look for a booster and bracket from, say, a YJ or TJ.

Question and since we are on the topic of brake boosters......Will the 7" or 8" be better for a CJ8 / bolt in ?

I really don't want to scrounge for parts and this is an example (seller), I'm sure I can find it elsewhere like you said (Summit).

    Thanks,
    Jim

The obvious difference between the the two is size ( under the hood clearance) and I assume your looking at dual chamber boosters also..........the 8" will have more initial volume and more reserve volume as compared to a 7 inch.........meaning that after the motor stops you may get an extra partial application after the initial full application is applied. Also a dual chamber at altitude has better stopping power simply because it stores more vacuum.........where the air is thinner...........Last, you need about 19-20 inches of vacuum for the system to operate properly.

Well Jr cleaned up the Jeep today getting it ready for the road and then after paint.
We are going to replace the windshield as well but I noticed these two bolts and the face of the windshield looks two piece. I don't ever remember something like this but is it two piece or one/replace the windshield like normal?

    Thanks,
    Jim

You're referring to replacing the windshield, or the windshield glass?

Thanks Rusty-So to remove the windshield from the Jeep I can either remove the outside hing or can I remove these two bolts and slide the windshield up off the hinge right?

We want to remove the windshield to replace the glass/paint it.

Just wondering the other option if needed.

    Thanks,
    Jim

just pulling those 4 bolts wont allow the frame to come off, there are some hidden ones under the frame. un hook the wiper wires from the wiper switch,un latch the two catches on the dash and tip the window frame forward. the lower hinges have a slot in them when you get the frame in the right spot it will pull up and come right off. this should help http://oljeep.com/edge_74_tsm.html

Don't mess with the hinges. Disconnect the wiper cable, tilt the windshield half-way forward, and lift it off.

Remembering back, that is the best way to get it off. But to replace the windshield frame the hinges have to come off. Hence the question of the two bolts.

Oops, should have said Valve Guide Seals.

I have two different sets of umbrella seals and I would like to know the difference between the two.
Jr & Ashley have to replace theirs and we are not sure which set to go with. Which set will hold up the longest, and which set would you use?

Depending on which set would be best, we would buy an additional set for the other engine.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Polyacrylate valve stem set on right (black) and the nylon set on the left.
