Right Howard, its a lockout cable not very heavy. The FC's use a cable but I can't find any pictures. Herm sells a replacement but it may as well not exist to me then. I was going to use a heavy duty pto shift cable. I'm sure I could engage the od but wasn't sure I could get it to disengage ( pushing) maybe if you pulled thr detent spring and ball. Didn't feel warm and fuzzy about it.

My local tractor place sells a choke “cable” that is a sheathed heavy wire with a T-handle. It’s about 25’ long and has a super-easy pull. I think it could do the trick.

Yeah, the lever/rod give a lot of mechanical advantage that you would loose with a straight cable setup.

Just make sure you have enough travel with out coming out of the guide (?) tube on the handle end

OK so got the shifter linkage done. It's a tight fit snaking over the D18 front housing, along the T18 shifter. Lots of in and out, version E or F can't remember. Fire it up, run it in a few minutes, go to shift into OD nope, nada having none of it. Recheck all my linkage, seems good. Drums fingers..Sigh pull the OD off. Can't get it to slide forward into OD off the Tcase.
Now folks here's where that little voice says stuff that oily mess back in the box for a return, but the other voice says how longs that gonna take? NH next weekend wanted to put some miles on it CO looming less than 8 weeks. The best thing to do is take your brand new $1200 OD apart, right? Pull up the exploded diagram and get to work. When you pull the case halves apart the collar will come forward into OD. Put the halves back together and it shoves it back into direct and won't come forward  get to skulking around, playing with the micrometer how far the case halves go together before it shoves it back. What I find is when assembled they drove the roll pin too far in that holds the fork to the shaft. The guide in the forward case halve that goes in the shift rod contacts the pin and drives the fork and collar back, won't let it come forward. Clearly the assemblers didn't check for operation once assembled. 3 seconds with a drift to push the pin back flush inside, 30 sec. with the Dremel to clean up where the pin contacted the guide. Hey guess what I have OD now! Until my tack welds broke on the linkage:worry: Tomorrow I'll weld everything up solid, paint and reinstall. Gratuitous finished pics and test drive later. Way to stay with it , Rich. Do you think you had an incomplete/improper machining process from the builders ? I have been noticing quit a few of these ' Incomplete/ Good enough ' type things myself, particularly in the past couple of years ? ......I dunno, but it's a good mechanic that stays with & solves these problems.
Way to Go.......Your a good ' Wrench ', as they used to say.

Good job! It is good to know that I have found a blog where folks here can actually find problems and fix them. So many people now days are all about excuses rather than solutions.

Heres the pieces parts before assembly. Have to say OD is nice! Took a trip to pick up Mr. Williams and a bag of ice What a difference 5-600 rpm is. Much less tcase howl and the driveline wrap is noticeably less. The tunnel cover only needed a 2" hole and I cut up a twin stick boot. Just need to make a ring for it And then there was 4... You'll like the OD more and more as you use it. I thought it was optional until I put in the 1st one. Now I see it as a must.

Today... I replaced about 6" of 1/4" rubber fuel line between the hard line and the fuel pump (f-head).

Cured the odd moments of power loss - it was sucking air through a hole where the hose was rotted. Easy fix.

I didn't fully enjoy mine until I pulled the f-134 out. It was night and day with the 3.3l v6 having 98hp and a little more torque.

X3 on the overdrive. I was considering not putting one in the '71 for simplicity's sake. Now that it's in I love it. It's great being able to split any gear.

Pressure washed the wife's muddy 62. Then got in trouble for washing off her "decals".

Still waiting for the new shackle bushings to get the jeep rolling again. In the meantime I installed HD draglink and Tierod.

    this one fought me.

I had the bend up for additional clearance. New one is much heavier.
