Does anyone know the mfg for the early 70s vapor canisters? I have seen some on eBay made by Rochester that look like the one I need for my 74 cj5. I need just the 2 ports, in from the tank and out to the snorkel, without the vacuum operated valve. The ones I saw were for 1970 to 73 pontiacs and Cadillacs. Does anyone know if one like this would work? I would order a new one but don't want to deal with the valve. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

It should work ... AFAIK all that Jeep used were Rochester canisters - a commodity part. A '74 should have the 2-port canister; one connection to the tank and the other to the air cleaner snorkel. No connection to the float bowl, IIRC. This will only work with the factory air cleaner, because the purge comes from the Bernoulli effect of the snorkel air flow over the nipple in the snorkel. There is no valve in the canister, AFAIK. Make sure the canister you get does not need a connection to manifold vacuum - that implies an active valve inside the canister.

You will also need a liquid check valve under the left rear fender.

Thanks Timgr, glad to hear that. I thought they looked the same.
Yes I intend to replace the liquid check valve and add a roll over valve. I ordered one of the reproduction LCV but they were out stock/discontinued. The company that made my new poly tank(mts?) makes a compact version that is supposed to replace it for 50 bucks(JLCV-1). I was hoping for cheaper but that's probably not bad for new. Do you or anyone else have any experience with this part?

For those wanting to avoid a purchase... my charcoal canister was in rough shape and I was getting some gas fumes in the garage. So, I cut the top off of it, dumped out the charcoal and cleaned it up real good. Then, went to Petsmart and purchased some fish tank charcoal and filled mine back up again. A little epoxy to put the top back on again and my canister is working perfectly again... no gas smell.

Good info Troy. I bought a used canister off ebay from a 72 Lemans, I think? It looks like how I remember mine. Can't be sure though because mine has been gone since 1984:oops:
