hey guys just curious what the best hei distributor to convert to on a 225 v6. I have points right now and I’m looking to upgrade. I found the dui hei and an hei from CRT performance. The one from crt is a bit cheaper I’m wondering if anyone has had a experience with it.

The first one I bought was from CRT - since then, I've built my own. No issues with the CRT unit.

I'm looking to do the same thing also. Been thinking about it for a while now, but just not sure which one to pull the trigger on. I have heard a lot of talk about it and heard a whole variety of different choices. I'll be watching this one. I would like to hear from those who installed. Thanks for posting.

Any change of coils to go with this ?? Upgrades etc ?

I run a CRT unit. I've installed two. Great directions, easy installation, awesome performance.

You don't use a separate coil when you go HEI...It's in the cap.

I also read that when you install one of these you have to grind down part of the intake manifold for clearance. Can that be done with the intake still on the motor?

This is THE single best change that you can make to a v6. It is also the ONLY GM HEI distributor that has to be clocked in the exact right place when installed. Many a seasoned mechanic has been stymied because they simply were not aware of how to install it. The number one plug needs to also be on the correct spot on the cap.

Just a comment about this - you have to match the firing pattern of an odd-fire distributor, not necessarily the firing order. The odd-fire gives a spark at first 90 then 150 degrees of crank rotation, and the distributor rotation between sparks is 45-75-45-75-45-75. So you have three positions of the wires that will be matched with the firing pattern - move the wire positions, and you may no longer be firing at the same advance before TDC on all of the cylinders.

    V6 engine - Wikipedia

Never owned a 225, but I expect the other two possible locations for the wires simply won't work on the 225 because of interference with the cap shape or the vacuum advance canister.

NB just getting the plug wires in the right place on the cap is not sufficient - you also need for the rotor to point to the #1 wire when the cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke.

Doesn't that come with the territory?

Yes ... sorry for stating the obvious :coffee:

Just trying to be thorough. I've already changed the wording of the original post a couple of times to make it more clear.

The timing of which pick-up coil lobe that it is on also matters. Like I said, not your normal GM hei that is stick it and put number one on whichever point on the cap the rotor is facing.

:( Sorry...It's probably NOT obvious...Reminders are good. IIRC...You can clock it wrong and it will still run, but VERY poorly.

After installing an HEI in at least 25 different odd-fire Jeeps, I still have to re-check the specifics on what to do. Nothing obvious about it. We should try to put a definitive sticky together on what it actually takes. Many a tool has been thrown trying to figure this out. It is still the very best upgrade for a 225.

doesn't the DUI model have an extended body to clear the intake?

They have 2 versions. A short version and a long version. Make sure you order he long version, you wil still need to use a button head bolt on the intake manifold to clear.
