72 Cj5 Filler Neck Oddity

Hello to all and thank you in advance for everything I have learned from this forum. I have been lurking for a while and have already gained much knowledge from your wisdom.

I just purchased my first CJ, a 72 CJ5 in very near-stock condition. This weekend I replaced the fuel tank and found that the filler neck has been put together Frankenstein style. My problem is that I seem to have an odd setup. My fuel filler exits out the passenger side behind the rear tire (facing the side), but every website I see has the filler in the back passenger area ( facing rear). I need to replace the filler neck/hose and vent hose but can't find one that exits to the side, only to the rear.

It doesn't seem to have been modified. No welds or anything. I'm flummoxed.

Any ideas or recommendations?

Hi - Welcome from Boston.

Yes, a '72 should have a rear-exiting fuel filler. These parts are very scarce and converting what you have to the proper filler could be difficult and expensive. There's no easy way to reconcile what you have with the original '72 config.

The later Jeeps had a side-fill tank, which is not that difficult to adapt to the earlier Jeeps. This is often done for the Pre-1970 Jeeps which came with a tank under the drivers seat. A rear-mounted tank is a common upgrade for these Jeeps, typically as an addition to the small factory tank. The side-fill parts are more available, and these conversion often get that style of filler.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I'm not necessarily trying to restore it to original, just trying to fix the leaky filler.

If it is a conversion, could you point me in the direction for the parts I need ( what years had the side fill neck?) Are there CJ's that had a similar fuel tank (filler tube coming off the pass. side) and a side fill filler neck?

 

I used radiator hose for the filler on my '67 when I added the rear tank.

 

Take a look at the parts pictured for the 050, 051 and 062 tanks on the MTS site. MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep CJ/YJ Gas Tanks AFAIK all the hoses are available; it's just the filler neck that the gas cap goes on that's not obtainable.

 

If ya wanna put it back to stock it looks like 4WD.com has the parts??

Good info timgr. Does anyone know what years CJ's had the filler exit on the passenger side?

Seems he chose to move the filler to the side of the Jeep. So apparently the '78-up plumbing will work with the side fill, if you have the tank with the small diameter neck that matches the available filler neck (the one in Zila's post)

It may be that new Jeeps never got the filler on the side until very recently. Looking at some recent Wranglers, the filler is now on the driver's side:

I have found that Barney’s Jeep parts has had the fuel filler parts remanufactores as I also have a early 1972 and his parts look perfect and fit perfect.

I second the Barneys part. I have one for my 57 rear tank conversion. It's a beautiful piece. He also reproduces the heater control for the intermediates. I'm putting a heater out of a 73 in my 57. Cut the cowl piece outta the 73 grafted into the 57. Nice
