Bad case of "the Jeep lean"

 

I'm thinking next chance I have I'll pull the drain plug on the trans and see what comes out. Thinking about filling it with a penetrating oil just to see if that loosens anything. Any recommendations on what to put in?

 

It depends on what comes out of the drain plug. I would pull what is left of the floor plate and remove the six bolts retaining the top cane shift assembly. That way, you can look in and see the condition of the gears, and the oil, if any is left. When transmissions have flooded with water, I drain all I can, and refill with diesel fuel to hold off further rusting.

OK thanks, I'll try and have a look see that way. Per the previous owner it had a half cab on it until fairly recently so I'm hoping that helped protect it.

Love that second pic in the original post. You know it is bad when your side mounted spare actually reaches the ground on its own and helps hold up the vehicle like a training wheel.

 

Ive heard ATF works well to loosen rusted parts. Mixed with acetone is often mentioned, though I suppose the idea is to let the acetone flash off. That wont happen in a closed tranny, and you sure better not decide to use a torch on it until it does evaporate off.

 

I got it pretty well taken apart today. Guys were right, it does have 4.27 axles. All the shift levers are moving so that's a good sign. I squirted a lot of marvel mystery oil into the cylinders. Planning to gently try and turn the engine next week.

I hope that you have a well organised shop to separate parts and throw away the rusted parts. Rusted steel is like a razor and you can be hurt easily. I cut my leg long ago on a Citroen DS and felt nothing except I saw blood. Then I had to have some sewing at the hospital .
So...be careful.

Yes, I'm fortunate to have a good work space to dismantle this. I did however manage to light my pant leg on fire using the cutoff blade in my grinder today. Come to find out sparks are hot.

 

Modern fabrics in contact with grinder sparks melt. I have a big hole in the sleeve of a fleece pullover that was in the path of grinder sparks.

Looks just like the '56 I drove in college. I had a pair of wood 2x6 planks under the body holding it up.

That PTO is nothing to sneeze at. PTO winches are the bee's knees.

 

Cotton is the solution. Except specialised clothers using special fibers like Nomex, there is always a risk of melting, burning...

 

Just a follow up in case anyone is interested. I got the Jeep pulled apart. After taking 600 lbs to the scrap yard I have a good amount of usable parts.
Axles (4.27 Dana 44 and 27), drive shafts and steering appear to be in usable condition. The transmission and transfer case actually looked pretty good inside. I pulled the oil pan on the transfer case and top cover on the transmission. They both shift through all the gears fine. The PTO needed bearings and a chain but after that it should be good equipment.
The engine is turning freely and the starter works. I pulled and cleaned the carburetor and it's actually in good shape. I'm planning to pull both valve covers and have a look-see. After that fresh oil and I'll crank it and see if it makes oil pressure and compression.
The oil bath air cleaner doesn't appear rusted out although a mouse is now without a place to live. I'm going to try and clean that out good. It would look sweet on my M38A1 that currently has a modern rectangular air filter. Although for a Jeep that is to be driven frequently and off road I don't know if that is a good idea.
I'm planning to try and sell off what I don't need since I see an overdrive purchase in my future. The engine I may hang on to depending on if and how well it runs. It would be nice to have a spare on the shelf (floor?) in case the one in the M38A1 gets tired.

 

That jeep looked so bad I was sure everything was locked up and filled with water. Awesome that you got som great parts out of it.
