No More Bad Condensors

They have a voltage rating which must not be exceeded. As the voltage rating goes up, size and cost do too. You can use a 1000V part for a 100V application, but not vice-versa.

Comment about above - my understanding is that JB Weld is metal filled epoxy. I'd think epoxy is fine as a potting compound, but the metal filler would seem less than ideal for an electrical application. Silicone/RTV is bad too because it contains acetic acid that is released when the material cures. This will corrode your wiring. You're better off with the generic 2-part epoxy from the hardware store, with no metal filler, or an actual potting compound for electronics. This is a great idea but it's a damm shame that replacement parts quality has deteriorated so much that it's nessecary.

 

When you say JB weld you have to specify, they make a dozen epoxy's or more and not all of them have metal in them.

 

You Guys Amaze me, I have never had a bad condenser, like Pete says, but I don't have any new ones earthier. I have three distributors, and three or four old condensers, so I have not given it a thought. I keep a set of points and a condenser in my tool box, but as of yet never needed it. With all the problems you are talking about I am thinking about buying an electronic just in case I can't get a good condenser. I would like to have one like CJ 5A made for back up. Good Luck

The original condenser still works in my 1918 Titan tractor. But if it gets wet, forget it. I have the same capacitors for the mag and one day I'll replace it. But for now, it works.

 

So will you make me one for say $25? Using the Black Encapsulating Epoxy?

 

Will things not run right when the condenser goes bad? Or will it just ruin the points faster?

I'm new to the points thing and am gonna be putting on some miles next year!

 

Or... the points crud up rapidly due to excess arc-ing. The engine will run badly.

Went with Pertronix on my cj. Only failure I had with that was the little donut thing came apart one time due to centrifugal force. Pertronix sent a new part and no problem since then. I also wrapped the new donut in electrical tape just in case. Never liked points. My dad's 65 Chevy wagon had little problem with them but my wife's Pinto ate them like candy. That Pinto crapped out constantly due to bad points. And my Jeep had terrible point slap at high revs. No more points for me as long as I have any alternative.

 

Am I able/allowed to answer to this idea?
