My oldest son lives about an hour from me and owns an oil change business. He has expanded into vehicle repairs including diesel trucks and installing 4 wheel drive lifts and other upgrades. Yesterday a customer brought him a 1967 Jeep M715. It has the 230 cubic inch Tornado straight 6. It is missing the carburetor, starter, and distributor. The customer wants him to get it running. I think it looks pretty cool.

I could see the owner wanting to keep it original
but the best thing you can do to those trucks is a engine swap

Yep, from what I understand that engine is pretty underpowered for the truck. And it gets terrible gas mileage.

The distributor and starter are likely missing because the previous ownerv was trying to convert it from 24V to 12V.
Willys did use the 230 OHC engine is '62-'64 Wagons, and '62-up Wagoneers and pickups, so those two items can be found, but are probably pretty elusive.
Like Ron said, a small block Chevy transforms an M715 into a useable truck.

    GM350 will bolt in.

They will haul incredible loads, but I'd definitely want the PTO winch off-road. Not much flex.

Vintage Power Wagons (company name) has parts for the 230.

I like the 715. That one looks pretty decent. Feel free to add more pictures.

I always thought about swapping a civilian J truck cab onto one, if that's possible.

Ehhh, yea. Warmer and generally more cozy in inclement weather. I dunno. Just a thought. I'd have to own one before unmaking such a dramatic change I guess. And have to find a good J truck cab..........which would likely torpedo the project from the beginning.

Did any 715s come with a hard cab (roof and back), or only with the canvas? Same question for the M37 as well...

My M715 had a removable metal "Arctic" cab roof.

M37's also had the Arctic top available. Mine actually had one when I bought it but it was too rusty to be worth saving and I didn't really like it anyway.

All the M715s I seen in person have all been soft-top versions, though I have seen pictures of what appear to be "factory" hardtops. Most of the Volunteer Fire Departments on Hatteras Island got surplus M715s from the Department of Forestry back in the late '70's. All had soft top frames, and tatters of canvas. A few years into ownership of our department's, I built an aluminum top right onto the soft top frame, even giving it a little "brow" over the windshield, kind of like a Kelly top. Everything was riveted and it was near water tight in all but the hardest rains, but the windows fogged terribly as there was no defroster or A/C. Everyone that saw the top assumed it was a factory hardtop.
