Guys, I finally found out what's making noise in my transfer case.. Its entirely wore out. Sliding gear can cock on the shaft almost 1/4 inch and the lash between the intermediate and output shaft gear make a clunck back and forth.

Its a big hole case and has the gears that match the t-90 or t-86 years of production. I put a novak shaft in it about 3K miles ago. I don't know what made me think this transfer case was worthy of being put back in.

Anyway, jeeps fully apart right now for the 4.3 install and its time to fix the junk.

Are all the input shafts the same and has anyone had good luck with Omix gears?

Can you bore the gears out and press in a sleeve?

I think the sliding gear is splined.

It is splined. I don't want to try and fix this junk. I want a solution that isn't a D20 or a D300. I would like to keep my full float offset axle.

I read his post totally wrong. I thought he was talking about the intermediate gear.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

The 'net is full of crappy reviews of anything Omix.
    Gears are no better.
Step up and buy quality if you must.

I would buy NOS, but it seems that there are pretty much none left. I already cobbled together this one, but its really worn out. Looking to not go D20 or d300 with a rear axle change or another expensive adapter to the SM420.

Surely there's members on here who have some good used gears for you. I'd trust 60 year old Spicer over brand new Omix....

Inspired by my Dad's full-time Dana 18, I've thought a Land Rover L230T would be a good transfer case.

It's gear drive like a Dana 18, with low range, but also has a locking center diff. Apparently two different companies were making under/overdrives for them. Of course, you're on your own for adapters.

I wonder if Roxor gears fit and are any better than Omix?

How much are you willing to spend...there are usually a few D18s floating around on CL/FB that you could probably get cheap and either pull the gears or just rebuild and use?

I just looked at Atlas cases... HHAAHAHAHA! There are 18's here too. Used and with 1 1/8th shafts, small hole etc for like 175 bucks. Forget that. I'm willing to spend some money to repair this old junk, but I don't want to spend money on stuff that's in similar condition. I really want some NOS parts or an effective compromise. If I have to spend a lot or fabricate anything, i will find another avenue.

What about Tera Flex gears....I don't know if they make straight replacement gears or only the Low gears....When I installed their low gears I contacted them directly to get only the gears I wanted and not the whole kit etc...they were easy and helpful to work with.

I looked at terra flex gears, but they are over 800 bucks and it doesn't come with everything I need. For that money, I will go another route.
Debella may be a supplier. Thanks!
