Fuel Bowl Always Empty

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by Randy Benedict, Jan 1, 2021.

  1. I run a stock dauntless with the 2G carb. Every time I go to start it, I have to crank it over for 5 - 10 seconds before the accelerator pumps and she fires up. I understand that the new gas we have evaporates quickly, but enough to empty the fuel bowl? Considering putting a block off plate over the fuel pump and running an electric pump. Anyone else have this issue?

It might be good to check if the pump is not leaking back thru the check valves. Run a rubber tube into a quart glass jar like a pump flow test, then with the hose at the bottom of the jar and the jar up above the pump just let is sit and check on it to see if the fuel in the jar goes backwards down the fuel line.

Are you talking about the carb fuel bowl? How often is every time?

Fuel pump diaphragm may have a pin hole . I do not know if your pump is serviceable but my two cents worth ,

I had this issue on a F head. Turned out to be a bad accelerator pump diaphragm

I would take the top off the carburetor and confirm that the bowl is actually dry.

Fuel cannot drain back to the fuel pump, and the bowl should remain full over the course of a few days. To me, cranking 10-15 seconds sounds like your fuel pump is great but the bowl is dry. This is about how much cranking should be required to start from a dry bowl, if the fuel pump is good.

Some carburetors are worse about float bowl evaporation than others. Also, some carburetor designs take gas from the bottom of the float bowl, and any gaskets or diaphragms in these circuits can go bad, letting the bowl drain.

The Motorcraft 21xx carburetors get dry bowl disease rather easily, so it's the topic of much discussion on the Wagoneer boards. Some things that accelerate evaporation will be running with an open element or no air cleaner, very hot days in direct sun, bad carb top gaskets, and as mentioned above, leaky power valves. If the carb top is warped, this can leave a gap around the top and evaporation will be accelerated. Don't know if this is a problem with the 2G; the 4300 and 4350 Motorcraft carbs often have warped tops due to over-tightening of the air cleaner bolt.

5-10 seconds doesn't seem like much of an issue.

  12. I run her every 2 -3 days. Seems like this is somewhat of a common problem. I'm adding a one way valve. Maybe that will help. Thanks to all.

And also verify the float level setting. Maybe it' too low and the carb doesn't have much to begin with.
