Barn find a 70 CJ 5, no engine, 3 speed trans.
Son-n-law gave me a 76 Buick V6 231 out of a Buick Skylark no carb.was running before he sold carb.
Using Holly's charts it's a 2GC large bore, specs on car said it had a 2 barrel Rochester.
    Has a HEI distributor.
Which carburetor would you install and why,
    Thank you for your input.

Rochester large bore 2GC was stock and bolts right up, runs well even upside down. Motorcraft 2100/2150 close second, they require an adapter.

I agree. The Rochester 2G series (big and small) is an outstanding carb and I have always been surprised it wasn't used more often for carb swaps/upgrades on the likes of the Jeep 323 and 258 sixes, Land cruisers, IH's etc.....

I waffled back and forth on this for a while.

The engine I have is a 3.8 (231) out of an 85 Regal so it had the computer controlled version of the Rochester 2G which I can't use in my Jeep.

I looked hard at installing a Motorcraft 2100 but the only adaptor I could find had bad reviews, so I thought about making my own adaptor, which I have done before. Then I found a "remanufactured" earlier version Rochester listed by an Ebay seller with 100% positive feedback, so I just bit the bullet and bought that, because as said they are real good carburetors and this will bolt right up. Cost including shipping was $196 which seems high for a rebuilt carburetor but a new one is about $300.

I took a 30 year hiatus from working on cars and prices on stuff like this have gone up a bit, but I have more money than time nowadays and just want to get it done.

The Motorcraft 2100 carburetors can be had a good bit cheaper, if you want to go with that an an adaptor.

I was the opposite too for most of my life, but once all the kids grew up and moved away my very frugal wife has greatly improved our financial situation. I just turned 65 and want to get this Jeep up and going while I still have a few more years to enjoy driving it.

If it is a big bore 2G series, why don't you install an earlier non emission 2G and call it done. That would save a lot of adapting.

Just to eliminate confusion here, an 85 Buick would have a Rochester E2ME carb...essentially, the front half of a Qjet with electronic mixture controls. Completely different from the 2G series carbs.

It looks like the E2ME has a different bolt pattern so the original poster would need a manifold or at least an adapter to go with a 2G?

I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but looks like I may have caused some confusion in this discussion. I apologize for that.

The OP has a 76 Buick V6 not the 85 I have. The 76 would have a non-computer controlled carburetor, not sure whether it would be the 2G or not.

My 85 engine has the Computer controlled "DualJet", and I have ordered the earlier (1980) version of this carburetor which looks exactly the same other than not having the plugins for the computer. As said above it looks like the front half of a Q-Jet.

76 would be the 2G, but the larger base version compared to a stock 225 carb.
Also, 2G refers to a manual choke carb, 2GC has the thermostatic choke on the carb and 2GV has the choke thermostat mounted to the intake manifold.
