Fuel Tank Straps

The under seat gas tank in my 1970 CJ has the sender on top and a drain on the bottom, so I'm guessing it's the correct one for this model, anyways it's just laying loose under the seat with nothing holding it. I found a few strap kits, but not sure which is the right one. I THINK I need one 2 piece strap kit, but am not sure. Can someone shed some light? Thanks!

I'm not good on the computer, but I just googled Jeep tank straps and came up with a 2 piece kit and a 1 piece kit. I'm going to order the 1 piece from Walcks.

 

1 piece is accurate. Just put in a new tank and strap too.

 

My tank is clean and the gauge still actually works, but the tank just bangs around under the seat, luckily the seat frame keeps it somewhat caged in.

 

I put firing strips under my tank, and used an aftermarket gas tank repair straps to mount it. It raised the tank about a 1/4" or less, didn't affect the filler pipe in the side hole, and now I can blow the san, dirt, and water out from under the tank so it doesn't rust the floor or the tank. Especially the rear seams, rust trap area for both tank and body.

Poor design... I had to patch mine after less than 70 years.

 

I use some rubber bungee cords under the the tank, need to watch how thick the cords are.

 

Thanks for the posts, I like the furring strip idea, If I go that route I can lengthen the stock strap.

 

My 1965 had just one strap

 

I would use the thickness of whatever to line up the filler neck in the body opening. I used sections of broken rubber bungees as spacers when I did one of these installs, many years ago.

 

Hey fellow 198'er....i just noticed you have the same accelerator pedal as mine which i thought was not a CJ pedal. hmmmmm

 

My 66 model has a different pedal than the 70 model one in the posted photo...as far as I know both are stock. Not sure when jeep made the changes but the 70 model type is much more comfortable on the foot....

Mine also has the same pedal that's in the picture, I think my Jeep is a left over 69 titled as a 70.

 

This is the original wood strip that was under the tank on my 65. It was held in place by two small wood screws through the floor that came in from underneath. I ended up putting rubber tarp straps under the tank since the wood holds moisture.

I tried - but couldn't give that piece of wood away. It was perfect except for the finish.
